France Galop to cut weight allowance for female jockeys

France Galop is to cut the weight allowance for female jockeys on March 1, 2018.

The weight concession will be reduced to 1.5kg from 2kg and will be limited to 4kg for apprentices and young jockeys.

Over jumps, the weight reduction will remain unchanged at 2kg for women.

The decision of French racing's governing body was made after it found there was a 165% increase in the number of wins by female jockeys since the change in March this year and the number of rides taken by women had doubled.

Edouard de Rothschild, president of France Galop, said: "Nearly a year on from the inception of this weight allowance for female jockeys, the visibility of these sportswomen has been reinforced.

"France Galop hopes this positive effect will be long-lasting.

"The measure will therefore be continued while undergoing an evolution which has been widely discussed among racing's stakeholders."

The news will come as another blow to Hayley Turner, who came out of retirement to take advantage of the allowance.

She is currently serving a ban, which expires on March 13, after admitting to placing bets while holding a licence.
