Too Familiar wins for Johnny Murtagh at Navan

More news from Sunday's feature meeting at Navan, where Too Familiar ran out a surprise winner of the opener.

Too Familiar came with a rattling late run on the far rail to make a winning debut in the Coolmore Stud Requinto EBF Fillies Maiden at Navan.

Niall McCullagh managed to squeeze the Johnny Murtagh-trained youngster through a tight gap in the final half-furlong and the 20/1 shot burst through to get the verdict by half a length from Crown Leah.

"That's a bit of pressure off as it's a new syndicate that we put together. It's their second runner and first winner," said Murtagh, who has made a bright start to the new campaign.

"I've always liked her and she showed a lot of pace. She has been working very well at home.

"I said to Niall to ride her for luck but he said she was brave, she pricked her ears a little bit when she went there but the gap opened up lovely and she's quickened well.

"There is a fillies' race in Naas for her now. The syndicate are still dreaming of Ascot so you never know. The dream is still alive!"

Ken's Sam's (10/1) got up in the shadow of the post to snatch victory in the Navan Welcomes Owners Today Apprentice Handicap.

Brave Display held a handy lead into the final furlong but could not maintain the momentum and was nailed on the line by Conor McGovern on Adrian Joyce's four-year-old filly.

There was just a head between them with Chosen Rock and January Morn only a further head and short head away in a very tight finish.

"Conor gave her a great ride and that's the way she needs to be ridden. She has to be held up as she doesn't have much of a kick if she's up with the pace," said Joyce.

"When she's dropped in like that and can settle she can rattle home. I thought he wasn't going to get out for a couple of strides but he got her out and in front when it mattered.

"She ran well the last day but Colm O'Donoghue said she didn't handle the ground in Cork. She went on that today.

"The owner is a good supporter of mine, Tommy Kelly. He's my partner's uncle and he's a good man. He wants to run her in Galway so that's probably where she'll be going to. We'll look for something over seven furlongs there."
