David Elsworth has won the HWPA President's Award


Veteran trainer David Elsworth, responsible for such giants of the turf as Desert Orchid and Persian Punch, won the HWPA President's Award at the 51st annual Horserace Writers & Photographers Association Derby Awards Lunch.

Elsworth, who stated training in 1978, won two Goodwood Cups with Persian Punch and coincidentally clerk of the course Seamus Buckley gained the George Ennor Trophy for Outstanding Achievement following his recent retirement at the Sussex track.

Aidan O'Brien was voted HWPA Flat Trainer of the Year after a record-breaking 2017 season that saw him beat Bobby Frankel's tally of 25 Group One victorious in a year while Frankie Dettori gained the 2017 Flat Jockey of the Year. It was the fifth time he had landed the honour.

Dettori's best victories were on dual Claassic, King George and Arc heroine Enable in the colours of Khalid Abdullah, who was named Owner of the Year for a sixth time.

Charlie Appleby took the International Trainer of the Year prize for the second year running at the awards, held in London and supported by the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club.

Colin Tizzard was voted Jump Trainer of the Year with champion jockey Richard Johnson taking the rider's award.

The Peter O'Sullevan Trophy for Broadcaster of the Year went to former jump jockey Luke Harvey, of ITV Racing and At The Races.

Racing Post Bloodstock editor Chris McGrath was announced as Racing Writer of the Year, winning the Clive Graham Trophy for a third time.

The second award for a journalist, the John Oaksey Trophy for the Racing Reporter of the Year, went to Marcus Armytage of the Daily Telegraph.

Freelancer Dan Abraham was named Photographer of the Year for a fourth time while the Picture of the Year award went to Megan Ridgwell.
