Frankie Dettori takes three rides at Lingfield on Saturday including Lord North

Frankie Dettori has three rides at Lingfield on Saturday, including the classy Lord North, and Matt Brocklebank assesses each horse's claims.

Dettori returns to ride in the UK this weekend after luckless stints at the Breeders’ Cup and Melbourne Cup, but what are his chances of success?

The 48-year-old Italian is like a "prized fighter" according to trainer John Gosden these days and there’s no denying he picks and chooses when it comes to riding in Britain. Here, we look at his three chances of hitting the target at Lingfield on Saturday.

Scentasia (2.10 Lingfield)

This looks quite a deep race for the time of year on the all-weather but Scentasia has some all-important course form to her name following a two-length win at the end of last month. That came at a mile and she’s got something to prove over this longer trip having been beaten on her three previous attempts, but the last run was a career-best by some way and her sharp turn of foot will be a dangerous weapon if settling early and fully seeing out the 10 furlongs on this occasion.

Lord North (2.45 Lingfield)

Lightly-raced gelding who built on Ascot second to win the Cambridgeshire in really good style before he shaped like a step back up in trip was required when second to Escobar in the Balmoral Handicap on Champion Day. Duly delivered on his first attempt at 10 furlongs in Newmarket’s Listed James Seymour Stakes at the start of this month and, with a revised rating of 112, he sets the standard in this field. The Saturday banker for Dettori fans.

Stake Acclaim (3.15 Lingfield)

Getting a bit long in the tooth these days but he missed the whole of 2018 so hasn’t been over-raced and this year’s efforts have been pretty good in the main. Hasn’t raced on the all-weather since February 2016 and his record on artificial surfaces reads 0-4 but he’s a better horse these days and his shrewd trainer does well through the winter months. Has a handy stall to work with (3) and should be able to pick up a decent early position while he’s right in the mix from a ratings perspective too. Looks quite a big price all things considered, especially considering his jockey (Dettori 2-12 for Dean Ivory overall).
