A round-up of the rest of the action from Haydock on Sunday as Deja landed the bet365 Old Newton Cup for trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam.
The five-year-old was narrowly denied victory in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot last month but he duly made amends here, comfortably seeing off Laafy thanks to a decisive turn of foot at the furlong marker.
Having been front rank for much of the way at Ascot, jockey Harry Bentley - who had enjoyed more big-race success with Manuela De Vega earlier in the afternoon - was keen to bide as his time on his new partner as he anchored Deja towards the rear of the field in the early stages.
However, with the testing conditions in his favour, Deja was always travelling comfortably and he made a sweeping move down the centre of the track as Laafy kicked for home with just over a furlong to run.
Laafy's time in the lead didn't last long, Deja picking up in good style to move to the front and though he was inclined to shift left-handed in the closing stages, he was always doing enough to hand veteran trainer Chapple-Hyam a welcome high-profile winner following a lean couple of years.
Chapple-Hyam said: "I'm very pleased for everyone concerned.
"It was a bit of a slog out there and once he hit the front he almost pulled himself up.
"I think there's plenty more to come from him and the plan is to go to the Ebor next."
Archer's Dream springs surprise
Trainer James Fanshawe might have another promising sprinter on his hands after Archer's Dream (16/1) lowered the colours of Snazzy Jazzy and Sands Of Mali in the Each Way Extra At bet365 Conditions Stakes.
Always handily placed under Tom Marquand, the four-year-old inched to the front approaching the final furlong and comfortably held off favourite Snazzy Jazzy who ran on well for second.
Sands Of Mali could only finish fourth.
Despite Snazzy Jazzy's reverse, the Clive Cox team didn't leave Haydock empty handed after Cobh (12/1) had made a winning debut in the opening bet365 EBF Maiden Stakes.
Elsewhere on the card, Fovorite Moon (9/5 fav) looked every inch a stayer going places when landing the bet365 Handicap under Cieren Fallon.
Sir Michael Stoute's charge looked an unlucky loser when missing out at Doncaster last time but he made no mistake here, always well-positioned and knuckling down well to see off Subjectivist by a length.
