Jockey Nicola Currie claims All-Weather apprentice jockeys' title

Nicola Currie will be crowned All-Weather Champion Apprentice at Bath on Good Friday after another successful winter campaign.

The 25-year-old, originally from Isle of Arran in Scotland but now based in Lambourn with trainers Richard Hughes and Jamie Osborne, will be presented with the award after securing a total of 30 wins in the All-Weather Championships – a commanding 12 more wins than second placed Phil Dennis.

The All-Weather Championships is decided on wins from Tuesday October 23 2018 until Friday April 19 2019 on All-Weather tracks.

Ahead of her crowning, Currie spoke exclusively to Great British Racing, and revealed some things that may come as a surprise to some people in a fun-filled video.

Asked what she would do if she wasn’t a jockey, Currie told of her love for football which stems from her uncle Steve Nichol, who used to play for Liverpool FC.

The jockey also revealed her two racing idols as Cathy Gannon and Hayley Turner, and her best friend in the weighing room as Hollie Doyle.

Currie will receive £4,000 for winning the All-Weather Champion Apprentice title, and is set to have three chances of adding to her winner’s tally on what is set to be a special day for the jockey, starting with Ghayadh in the Betway Handicap, and followed by rides aboard Fizzy Feet and Rossetti in the Whitsbury Manor Stud / British EBF Lansdown Stakes and Dribuild Group Handicap.

In the video, Currie explained her dream race to win is the Investec Derby, the horse she most wished she could have ridden as Frankel.

She also revealed her favourite TV series as Keeping up with the Kardashians and her choice of a cheat meal to be Chinese.

Bath is one of three fixtures taking place on Good Friday, and kicks off an action-packed Easter weekend of racing, with 20 race meetings taking place across Great Britain over the bank holiday weekend.
