Race Report
Chesterfield got the better of Zubayr late on in a thrilling climax to the QTS Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr on Saturday.
Formerly trained by John Ferguson, Chesterfield took the widest passage of all round the home turn, but stayed on strongly under a fine ride from young pilot Daniel Sansom.
The well backed 5/1 joint-favourite Mohaayed ran on for third with Vosne Romanee filling the placings in fourth.
The winner was fresh from claiming a handicap at Aintree only two weeks ago and Seamus Mullins’ stable star defied an 11lb hike in the weights here to provide his trainer and jockey with their biggest wins to date.
Reaction:
Sansom said: " It feels a bit surreal. You can't do anything without the horse, though.
"I started in the pointing fields about three years ago and then Seamus asked me to join him as an amateur before turning professional last year.
"I just feel so thankful to everyone. I wasn't even sure I'd won crossing the line."
Mullins said: "This was the plan after Newbury as we knew we wouldn't get in at Cheltenham.
"One of the owners then suggested taking in Aintree on the way as he'd get his ground. He's now won both."
