Outsider Lily's Candle won the Group One QATAR Prix Marcel Boussac as the home contenders bossed the opener on Arc day.
The 25/1 chance swooped late in a bunched finish to collar once-raced maiden Matematica close home, with Star Terms best of the raiders back in third for Richard Hannon and Andrea Atzeni.
Ryan Moore attempted to make the best of his way home on Aidan O'Brien's Pink Dogwood but they were a sitting duck entering the final couple of furlongs and Matematica appeared to have made a race-winning move when hitting the front under Maxime Guyon.
But Pierre-Charles Boudot had other ideas on the Fabrice Vermeulen-trained daughter of Style Vendome who came from the back of the pack to win by a neck.
Hannon said of Star Terms: "I thought she was slightly unlucky, as she was a short of room at a vital stage and got tightened up.
"She's an improving horse and I will advise her owner to wrap her up for a tilt at the Guineas next year."
