Hugo Palmer's Fajjaj and Harry Dunlop's Fighting Irish had to settle for second and third respectively as Ancient Spirit ran out a ready winner of the German 2000 Guineas at Cologne.
Frankie Dettori travelled over to partner the Al Shaqab-owned Fajjaj, who had finished fourth in the Tattersalls Stakes last season and was second at Windsor on his return.
Fighting Irish was a Group Two winner in France last season and crossed the line fourth in the Pavilion Stakes last time, out only to be disqualified when Stevie Donohoe weighed in light.
While both ran respectable races they were no match for the Jean-Pierre Carvalho-trained winner, who was ridden by Filip Minarik.
