Brinkley possible for Pertemps Final tilt at Cheltenham Festival

David Pipe is yet to finalise his team for the Cheltenham Festival but Brinkley could appear in it if ground conditions are suitable, following Sunday's Exeter win.

Having pulled up at the track on his return to action back in December, the six year old has now secured back-to-back victories after making his first start over 2m 7f a triumphant one to follow up his last time out success at Wincanton.

Making light work of the testing conditions the 100-30 chance showed a commendable attitude after the last to deny Tommy Rapper a winning return on his first start in 499 days by three and a quarter lengths. The victory also completed doubles for Pipe and winning rider Tom Scudamore.

Pipe said: “He is probably a better horse in these conditions. I thought he would win first time out this season but was very disappointing, then he bounced back last time at Wincanton.

“He has always given the impression this kind of trip would suit him but until you try it you don’t know, but he has seen it out well. He will make a smashing chaser.

“He has qualified for the Pertemps Final now but I need to sit and have a chat with the owners if they want to go there or look at something else. If it was like this ground you would have to take a chance but if it was good to soft ground you might miss it.”

As for Tommy Rapper his rider Harry Skelton felt it was a satisfactory display from the 10 year-old on his first outing since October 2019.

The jockey said: “If he was a sound horse he would be a right good horse. It was a good run considering the lay-off he has had.”
