BETTRENDS VERDICT

In one of the most competitive sprint handicaps of the year, all of our shortlist miss out on just one trend. The pick of them looks to be TIS MARVELLOUS who has been running into form of late and produced his best effort of the campaign at Royal Ascot in the Wokingham. He was only beaten by a length at the line and he shaped as though he should be able to pick up a similar prize in the not too distant future. He has plenty of back form with some high-class sprinters and although his draw may be on the low side, he has a leading chance.

Just missing out on the top spot is Gunmetal whose winning run was ended at the Curragh last time. The five-year-old has shown improved form since joining David Barron from Charlie Hills earlier this season, winning twice and he might not be done improving yet. He is slightly bigger in the betting than the leading protagonists at around 16/1 but it would be no surprise to see him run a big race.

Silent Echo was our trends selection for the Wokingham and he was far from disgraced, finishing fifth. Peter Hedger’s four-year-old was only beaten two and a half lengths at the line but the handicapper has given him a chance by dropping him 2lb. He has already shown himself capable of running well in this sort of company and he looks another solid contender for the shortlist.

The final member of the shortlist is Haddaf who will be running over six furlongs for just the third time in his career. James Tate’s three-year-old has won twice on Sandown’s 5f track this term, including in Listed company and if he can transfer his form to 6f, he could outrun his sizeable odds.

Bettrends 1-2-3-4

1st TIS MARVELLOUS (Sky Bet: 10/1)

2nd Gunmetal (14/1)

3rd Silent Echo (11/1)

4th Haddaf (20/1)
