"He's got 11lb in hand on his best form..." | Best bets for Tingle Creek day at Sandown

WHITE PEPPER - 1.30 Aintree

Eight live races on ITV4 for Tingle Creek and Becher Chase day and the action kicks off at Aintree with the Unibet Proudly Supports ‘Racing Is Everyone’s Sport’ Fillies’ Juvenile Hurdle.

This would be one of the least appealing betting races on the afternoon given the unknown quantities in the line-up but the form choice is undoubtedly WHITE PEPPER.

Gavin Cromwell’s filly bolted up at Galway on her second hurdling start and with her Flat experience to call upon, too, she looks the best equipped to deal with some lightly-raced types.

The main danger is Lady Pacifico, another ex-Flat horse who won well on her hurdling bow at Leicester last time out.

EDWARDSTONE - 1.50 Sandown

It could well be the crowning of King Edward in the Close Brothers Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown with Alan King’s EDWARDSTONE fancied to prevail over Third Time Lucki in the Grade One.

The seven-year-old was going well when brought down at Warwick on his chasing debut on November 5 and he bounced back less than two weeks later at the same track with an impressive win.

The five fences down the back straight at Warwick are a good prep for the test the Railway Fences at Sandown present, and given how he moved into the race off the pace set by For Pleasure he won’t mind a tow into this off Stolen Silver and Minella Drama.

Third Time Lucki is the obvious danger, but his worst performance over hurdles came at right-handed Musselburgh and there are no queries regarding Edwardstone on that score.

SIMPLY THE BETTS - 2.05 Aintree

Gavin Sheehan might just get the run of the race on SIMPLY THE BETTS in the Unibet Many Clouds Chase at Aintree and he can improve from his Cheltenham comeback to win this.

Off for a year between his Paddy Power Gold Cup outings, he shaped very encouragingly on his return last month on his stable debut for Paul Nicholls and better is expected in Liverpool.

Beaten just five lengths by Saturday’s likely favourite Protektorat off level weights at Cheltenham, he gets a 3lb pull in this race and could gain a positional advantage on the front end.

If Sheehan gets him jumping in a prominent position he can use his 2m4f pace to see off stronger stayers including Native River, a previous winner of this contest.

CHACUN POUR SOI - 2.25 Sandown

CHACUN POUR SOI looks the outstanding candidate in the Betfair Tingle Creek and he’s taken to take his Grade One tally to six on Saturday.

His superb performance at Punchestown when accounting for Allaho gives credence to Willie Mullins’ explanation that he wasn’t himself at Cheltenham when a below-par third behind Saturday’s rival Nube Negra.

And with Sandown looking tailor-made for his bold jumping and strong-travelling style he could easily have this in the bag by the time they turn for home.

I was leaning towards Hitman for the forecast spot when there was talk of cheekpieces being applied, but with Paul Nicholls saving those for another day – and the off-putting tongue-tie added – I’ll leave the exotic and just rely on Chacun Pour Soi to star in the day’s feature.

ACHILLE - 2.40 Aintree

The way Chris’s Dream was going when he unseated four out in the Grand National is worth noting with the Unibet Becher Chase in mind.

Henry De Bromhead’s horse could well have been in the top four had he stayed in the race and this 3m2f trip on soft ground on his seasonal reappearance could be perfect.

He goes really well fresh and the stable remains in great form, but the one nagging doubt is the 11-12 he has to lump around and with that in mind preference is for Venetia Williams’ ACHILLE at 16/1.

He’s 11 rising 12 now but looked to be still improving last season when he ran with great credit on all three starts despite being set too much to do in the Midlands National.

This drop back in trip to 3m2f off a light weight could be ideal and I’d expect a switch in tactics to a much more prominent role with Charlie Deutsch making use of his good jumping.

He also runs well fresh and off a light weight he can go really close at a big price.

SALTY BOY - 3.00 Sandown

The Betfair Exchange London National Handicap Chase looks wide open with several in-form stayers participating on good ground conditions that suit them well.

Strictlyadancer is on a four-timer but is now 7lb higher than his Haydock win two weeks ago, Deise Aba has an obvious chance with his course form but has been well found in the market and Christmas In April will be suited by the conditions after a good comeback in soft ground at Carlisle.

Preference is for David Bridgwater’s SALTY BOY, though, an improving staying chaser working from what looks a lowly handicap mark.

A winner off 5lb lower at Fontwell last time out, he remains 7lb shy of his hurdles mark and can continue his progression in a test that should suit, particularly as he proved himself on these sort of conditions on his latest start.

TAMAR BRIDGE - 3.15 Aintree

Olly Murphy’s TAMAR BRIDGE can justify favouritism in the Unibet – 2021 Horserace Betting Operator Of The Year Handicap Hurdle.

The six-year-old looks a lovely long-term prospect and he’ll love the soft ground and forecast showers at Aintree with a good bank of novice hurdle runs in such conditions under his belt.

He hosed up at Wetherby on his reappearance and an opening mark of 128 looks very fair indeed considering that form was franked by his stablemate Storm Of Light at Uttoxeter.

I don’t want to take him on, although the unexposed Martinhal will also like the ground and is worth each-way consideration - even if this trip proves short of his optimum in time.

ELHAM VALLEY - 3.35 Sandown

Benson, Hudson De Grugy and Metier rightly head the betting in the Betfair Daily Rewards December Handicap Hurdle that closes the ITV4 action at Sandown.

All three are well proven over the course and distance, but preference is for the other course and distance winner in the field, ELHAM VALLEY, who can make the most of the weight he receives from all of them at very fair odds.

Fergal O’Brien’s horse beat Hudson De Grugy - a horse who is three from three at Sandown subsequently – off level weights at this track on his British debut a year ago and he gets 10lb from Gary Moore’s horse on Saturday.

A super third off 124 in the Fred Winter after that, he runs off the same rating this weekend and he appeals given he should come on for his Aintree reappearance.

Anything at double-figure odds looks worthwhile business.
