Bath Good Friday meeting decimated as round course deemed unfit

Three races at Bath on Good Friday were abandoned 30 minutes before the start of the meeting.

One part of the round course before the left-hand bend was deemed unraceable, despite groundstaff working on it all morning.

As a result, the three races scheduled to take place on the round course were abandoned, leaving just the four contests on the straight track.

The valuable Dribuild Group Handicap over nearly a mile and a half, the Betway Handicap over a mile and the one-mile-five Slater Menswear Bristol Handicap were the races abandoned.

Clerk of the course Katie Stephens said: "We've had 10 millimetres (of rain) this morning. It's still raining and we're due up to an inch, possibly.

"We can always go to a flip-start if moving the stalls becomes an issue.

"It's our biggest day of the year, and we're as disappointed as anyone, but the reality is we called an inspection last night because we were concerned.

"We'd had no rain overnight but the rain has not relented all morning so we are where we are.

"I don't have any concerns with the straight course so we'll crack on."
