5:40 Chepstow - Tom Jones Live In July Handicap (Div I) 1m14y

A tricky day for punting with so much rain around, as where and when it falls seems to be open to some question. No such qualms at Chepstow though, who are due 15-20mm Monday night and that surely turns it soft or worse.

Old Punting Pointers friend EYE OF THE WATER loves it soft, and wouldn’t have a problem if it turned heavy, placed three times from four starts in his lifetime on such ground as described by Timeform. He comes here off the back of a better effort at Bath, clearly benefitting from his first run of the year ten days before, has the rails draw to work from and is taken to make all the running here.

6:10 Chepstow - Tom Jones Live In July Handicap (Div II) 1m14y

ALBUS ANNE has managed to throw away easy opportunities before so isn’t one to remortgage the house for, but her chances of doubling her tally tonight are pretty obvious again. Once the ground turned soft/heavy at the back end of last year she came good over this trip at Bath, and followed that up with two placed efforts there and at Newmarket, where she was probably given too much to do.

Albus Anne has not seen since that Newmarket run, but she twice went well off an absence last year, including on her seasonal reappearance, and made the frame on her only previous try at this venue.

7:40 Chepstow - Blake Morgan Handicap 6f16y

Connie’s Rose has a good record of front-running at Chepstow with four wins and four places from 15 starts at the track, and she may well be able to enhance that record tonight after a very good effort at Bath last week.

A good run was clearly expected as she went off a well-backed 3/1 chance, and she basically lost the race on the bob, beaten the minimum margin after rallying well once headed. She goes on pretty much all ground, and although stall 4 might not ideal on paper, there’s not that much pace on here and Hollie Doyle, who rides Chepstow so well, should be able to pick and choose where she wants to go, depending on where she feels the best of the ground is.

5:35 Southwell - Conditional Jockeys' Novices' Limited Handicap Hurdle 2½m

Away from Chepstow, there has to be a mention for the now-infamous Hillsin over at Southwell. The whys and wherefores of his Worcester run last summer have been well documented and it’s not for me to go raking over the coals, merely to point out that he’d have a great chance here if able to repeat his latest effort at Exeter, his first for Alan Jones.

At Exeter, Hillsin finished a ten-length second to the fast-improving Captain Wallace, who dotted up again on his next start. Third home Soir De Gala was also a winner on his next start, and fifth Paddy In The Caddy had been a winner on his previous run so the form looks very solid. He probably wants ground no worse than good to soft at this stage but having had a wind operation prior to that run, he has every chance of finally getting off the mark.
