Ki Woo has had his win over Caughtinyourtrance last time franked by the runner-up at Cartmel on Friday, and he might have been the pick for this but for the poor form of the Greenall/Guerriero yard. Nine of the last ten runners for the yard have started at single figures, but only a couple have run to form, with several notable disappointments, and that lapse in form means we are looking elsewhere for the winner.

SAMUEL SPADE seems to have been around forever but is only a seven-year-old and unexposed as a chaser after just two starts. Last time at Worcester, he impressed when beating Grand Clermont, himself a facile winner over this C&D on his previous start, and who reopposes here. That win took his lifetime record on good or quicker ground (ignoring runs at Cheltenham) to 1123141 and makes him of obvious intertest.

Raised 5lb for that he remains well treated on his peak hurdles form (1lb lower in the weights then when winning a 3m handicap hurdle at Ascot last year) and looks the type to progress further given how well he’s taken to fences. The Ben Pauling stable has not been overly busy this season, but four wins from the last 12 runners shows Pauling is hitting his straps at the right time, and it appears that Samuel Spade has been campaigned with this race very much in mind.

We want to be against Crebilly here even though he looked to be crying out for a return to further when getting up late to win at Market Rasen last time over 2½m, where he came in for an excellent Harry Cobden ride. In truth, Crebilly has often looked like he will improve for three miles, but he has been tried at this trip and further five times under rules, recording form figures of 7968P, and looking a blatant non-stayer every time. This race will place less emphasis on stamina than some at the trip, but it’s hard not to conclude that he looks poor value having gone back up in class.

American Sniper is sure to ensure a strong gallop here, with Musique du Fee and My Gift To You also likely to push the pace, and that ought to suit course winner MISS GOLDFIRE who has built up an excellent record under claiming rider Ciaran O’Shea and won as she liked over Newton Abbot’s extended 3m2f trip last time, taking her hurdles record on good or faster on left-handed tracks to 2511281U1, with the one poor effort coming at Cheltenham.

The handicapper asks her for more with an 8lb rise, but that looks fair, and she looks a progressive mare at the top of her game in a race full of ifs and buts.
