1968: Two-time Formula One world champion Jim Clark was killed when his Lotus spun off the track and hit a tree in a Formula Two race at Hockenheim.
1990: Great Britain suffered their first home defeat against France since 1967, losing the rugby league Test 25-18 at Headingley.
1993: National Hunt jockey Peter Scudamore retired after riding 1,677 winners.
2007: Greg Rusedski announced his retirement from tennis following his Davis Cup doubles victory for Great Britain alongside Jamie Murray against Holland.
2011: Rory McIlroy carded a seven-under-par 65 to hold the lead after the first day of the Masters at Augusta. However, the Northern Irishman's victory bid would ultimately end in disappointment when he blew a four-shot lead heading into the final round to finish 10 strokes behind winner Charl Schwartzel.
2012: Anti-elitism protester Trenton Oldfield caused the Boat Race to be dramatically halted after swimming between the Oxford and Cambridge crews.
2015: FIFA announced Football Association chairman Greg Dyke returned the watch given to him by the Brazilian Football Association during the 2014 World Cup and that the FIFA ethics committee has therefore closed proceedings in respect of a possible breach of the FIFA code of ethics.
