Moto GP: Valentino Rossi wins Dutch Grand Prix

Valentino Rossi edged out compatriot Danilo Petrucci in a thrilling battle to claim his first MotoGP win in over a year in Assen on Sunday.

Rossi claimed victory by just 0.063 seconds to move within seven points of championship leader Andrea Dovizioso, who had to settle for fifth.

Italians Rossi and Petrucci fought out a duel of their own over the final laps, with the latter holding the lead until three laps to go when Rossi passed at the chicane.

Rossi's Yamaha team-mate Maverick Vinales, who started the day with the championship lead, crashed out in the light drizzle at the Dutch circuit.

And that allowed Dovizioso - who started from ninth on the grid and at one point reached as high as second before the top two broke away - to claim the overall lead.

Marc Marquez was also in contention for the first half of the race but faded as the weather deteriorated and a white flag indicated riders could swap tyres.

While Rossi was holding off Petrucci to claim his first win since last year in Barcelona, Dovizioso, Marquez and Honda's Cal Crutchlow were embroiled in a fight for third.

In the end, Marquez just came through by 0.042seconds over Crutchlow, who edged the Italian by a similar distance as they crossed the line.
