British cyclist Steve Cummings faces surgery

Briton Steve Cummings faces surgery after sustaining a fractured collarbone, scapula and sternum during a crash which saw him abandon the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday, Team Dimension Data have announced.

The 36-year-old Tour de France stage winner had to quit the race, know as Vuelta al Pais Vasco, on stage four and X-rays later showed the extent of his injuries.

Cummings had been poised to lead the African team at Liege-Bastogne-Liege later this month but is now out recuperating, like team-mate Mark Cavendish, who has an ankle injury

.Team Dimension Data doctor Jarrad van Zuydam said: "The scapular fracture extends into the joint meaning that Steve will likely need surgery to ensure an accurate reduction.

"If all goes well, we can expect to have him on a trainer in two weeks' time with a gradual return as pain allows".
