Day four report

Kevin Tway hit three consecutive birdies in the play-off to seal his first PGA Tour title at the Safeway Open in California.

The American was in a three-way race for the title after going around in 71 in the final day and finishing on 14-under alongside compatriots Ryan Moore and Brandt Snedeker.

Snedeker could only manage par on the first playoff hole, the 18th, while Moore and Tway both hit birdies on the first two playoff holes.

The title was decided at the 10th, Tway carding a three on the par-4 for the win.

Snedeker went into the final round with a three-shot lead but had a torrid back-nine in which he dropped four shots to go around in 74.

Conversely, Moore played himself into contention with a round of 67 having started the day seven shots off the lead.

Martin Laird was the highest placed Briton but fell 31 places to joint 46th with a round of 76, including a double bogey on the par-3 second.

Day Three report

Brandt Snedeker's 10th PGA Tour win was in his sights as he held a three-shot lead into the final day of the Safeway Open.

The American shot a three-under 69 as gusty conditions challenged the field on day three, with round one leader Sepp Straka suffering the worst as he went six over and plummeted into joint 61st.

Snedeker dropped shots on the seventh and 13th, but picked up five, including three consecutive birdies before reaching the club house.

Tipped as a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup but overlooked, the 37-year-old has nine PGA Tour wins under his belt since his first card in 2007.

Kevin Tway of the US recorded a spotless 68 on Saturday to put him in second, while South Korean Sung-jae Im hit a 69 to sit four off the pace in third.

Martin Laird was the highest-placed Briton, who remained tied 15th after going round one under.

The Scotsman sits eight shots off the lead in a group of nine including Ryder Cup team member Phil Mickelson, who was picked for the US' ill-fated team by captain Jim Furyk.

After starting the day in shared second, Mickelson went two over par which may not have been so had he not been cruelly denied a shot when his ball span out of the hole on the 14th.

Americans Bill Haas and Sam Ryder recorded the best scores of the day after going round in 67 to sit in fourth and tied fifth respectively.

Day Two report

A round of 65 helped American Brandt Snedeker take a three-shot lead into the weekend at the Safeway Open.

The Nashville native climbed three places at Napa Valley going out in 32 and back in 33 to sit 13 under par.

His round followed Thursday's 66 and included eight birdies - one on a 37-foot putt on the sixth - with the only blemish on the books a four on the par-three seventh.

The standout performance of the day came from American Ricky Barnes, who had 11 birdies in a clean round of 61 to move up 126 places into tied-eighth.

Overnight leader and tour debutant Sepp Straka fell four places after carding a 72 to sit on nine under overall, along with Kevin Tway and Sungjae Im.

Ryan Moore, Phil Mickelson and Michael Thompson are all a shot ahead on 10-under, while Scot Martin Laird is the highest placed Brit on seven-under and tied for 14th after a round of 70.

Day One report

The Austrian led fellow rookie Chase Wright of the US in second, while Phil Mickelson sat two shots off the pace in third at the Silverado Resort in Napa Valley, California.

Straka, who earned his PGA card after finishing in third at the Web.com Tour Championship in September, hit nine of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens.

The Vienna-born 25-year-old picked up five shots by the 13th and hit back-to-back birdies from the 16th back to the clubhouse.

Putting Ryder Cup defeat in France behind him, Mickelson shot a blemish-free round of 65 as the 2018/19 season got under way.

The three-time Masters champion fired off six of his seven birdies consecutively from the ninth.

Scotland's Martin Laird was four shots off the lead after carding a 67.
