Round four report

Brendan Steele shot a three-under round of 69 to clinch the Safeway Open trophy for the second year in a row.

Starting the final round in third place, the American rallied on the front nine, not dropping a single shot and claiming three birdies by the halfway mark.

An equally impressive performance on the 16th and a staggering 369-yard drive on the 18th led to two more birdies on the par-5 holes - and his third PGA Tour title.

The 34-year-old finished the competition 15-under and two strokes ahead of Tony Finau.

The 28-year-old Finau claimed an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole, meaning the fellow Americans went into the back nine in a tied position.

But a double-bogey on the par-4 14th meant he could not chase down Steele, ending the first PGA Tour event of the season 13-under.

Tyler Duncan, who surprised many by going into the final day in pole position, could not hold on to his one-shot lead as the chasing pack came to the fore.

Two birdies on the front nine were overshadowed by three bogeys on the opening three holes and two more on the 7th and 8th holes.

A more steady performance on the back nine was not enough to lift the PGA rookie, who ended the event 11-under, and in joint fifth position with Graham DeLaet.

Meanwhile, PGA veteran Phil Mickelson, who has won 42 events, finished in third place, with three bogeys spoiling his round.

One of the big movers on day three, the 47-year-old birdied on the par-5 16th to close in on Steele.

He was one shot adrift but a bogey on the 17th left him with too much to do, seeing out the day two-under 70 and 12-under overall.

Scot Martin Laird finished within the top 20 in joint 17th after an up-and-down performance, going round in 74 on the final day in Napa, California.

Round three report

Tyler Duncan finds himself one shot ahead of the chasing pack going into the final round of the Safeway Open after carding an inconsistent round of 71 on Saturday.

After rounds of 65 and 66 at the course in Napa, California, the American birdied at the par-four first but dropped shots on the second, seventh and eighth.

But Duncan was able to convert a ten foot putt after a 175-yard tee shot on the par-three 11th to remain in pole position.

Duncan is now 9/2 joint favourite alongside Chesson Hadley, who shot 70 to move within a stroke of the lead.

Defending champion Brendan Steele is a shot further back and eased to 11/2 from 11/4 overnight. Bud Cauley is also 12 under, after climbing 12 places into joint third with a flawless six-under round of 66, and in to 6/1.

Two sets of back-to-back birdies on the 8th and 9th, and the 13th and 14th, pushed Cauley into contention.

Among the standout shots was a deft chip from a bunker on the par-five 16th which led to an easy two-foot par for a birdie.

Phil Mickelson, 42 time PGA Tour winner, was also one of the big movers on day three, finishing his round tied for seventh with a four-under 68, leaving him four shots off the lead at 10 under and 12/1 from 25/1. There's also a 6/1 Price Boost for either Mickelson or Tony Finau to come through the pack and take the title on Sunday.

Round two report

Brendan Steele is a warm 11/4 favourite for his second Safeway Open title in as many years after a second round of 67 left him one shot off the lead at the halfway point.

After carding 65 in his first round, the American nailed back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th - including a 129-yard approach which landed within inches of the pin - to go five under for the day and 12 under overall.

The current leader Tyler Duncan was tied at the top after the first round but bogeyed on the second, third and fourth to sit at one under for the day after four second-round holes on the front nine.

But he rallied to card a six-under round of 66 with three birdies and an eagle in his last five holes to sit at 13 under and is 7/1 - alongside Chesson Hadley and Tony Finau.

Hadley struggled on the first round at the course in Napa, California, carding a 72 and potentially missing the cut, but went round in 11-under 61 on the second day to race up into contention.

Among the highlights of his round - which included 10 birdies, an eagle and a single dropped shot on the par-four sixth - was a 166-yard tee shot on the 15th to set up an eight-foot birdie putt.

Phil Mickelson, 42 time PGA Tour winner, ended the day tied for 15th place with a pair of three-under rounds of 69 despite a double bogey on the par-four 14th and can be backed at 25/1 to come through the field over the weekend and take the title.

Round one report

Brendan Steele started the defence of the Safeway Open with a seven-under round of 65 to hold the joint lead in the first PGA Tour event of the season.

The American had a favourable bounce on the approach to the par-five fifth and holed the subsequent putt to eagle the hole in a round which included six birdies, and is now clear 7/1 favourite with Sky Bet.

Chez Reavie, Jamie Lovemark and Zach Johnson are all 14/1, and it's 16/1 bar.

The sole blot on his copybook was a bogey on the sixth hole in Napa, California, where he leads alongside fellow Americans Tyler Duncan and Tom Hoge, the latter hitting six birdies on the back nine to put himself into contention.

Phil Mickleson, 42 time PGA Tour winner, ended the day tied for 12th place with a three-under round of 69 and is 20/1 for the title.

Back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10th were cancelled out by dropped shots on both the eighth and 15th.

Sangmoon Bae carded a one-over 73 on his return to the PGA Tour after serving military service in his native South Korea, dropping four shots in a row but scoring birdies on the 12th and 18th.
