Jon Rahm wins CareerBuilder Challenge after play-off

Jon Rahm beat Andrew Landry on the fourth play-off hole to win the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta.

Fourth round report

Jon Rahm continued his meteoric rise as he beat Andrew Landry on the fourth play-off hole to win his second PGA Tour title at the CareerBuilder Challenge in La Quinta.

The Spaniard announced himself to the world on last season's west coast swing when he claimed his maiden crown at the Farmers Insurance Open, a title he will look to defend next week.

He was 137th in the world when he teed it up at Torrey Pines 12 months ago but after also claiming two wins on the European Tour last season, he will be up to second when the Official World Golf Ranking is confirmed on Monday morning.

Rahm fired a bogey-free 67 on Sunday to get to 22 under, a total matched by American Landry who had a single blemish in his closing 68, birdieing the last to force the play-off.

The 23-year-old missed a good chance to take the contest on the first extra hole, with Landry returning the favour on the next, but a 12-foot putt eventually handed Rahm the win.

John Huh, Adam Hadwin and Martin Piller finished two shots out of the play-off with Irishman Seamus Power at 17 under.

Third round report

American Austin Cook carded a round of 64 to jump nine places up the leaderboard and take a one shot lead into the final day of the CareerBuilder Challenge in California.

Cook, 26, was already six under at the turn, having birdied the 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th and eagled the par-five 6th.

A wobble on the 10th was followed by birdies on the 11th and 12th, and a solid tee shot at the par-three 15th wound up five feet from the hole to get a birdie and seal a slender lead over the chasing pack.

Andrew Landry, the leader at the halfway point, carded a 70 to finish 18-under along with Martin Piller, who followed Friday's 67 with the same score on the LaQuinta course.

Two players - Spain's Jon Rahm and American Scott Piercy - sit tied for fourth on 17-under.

Four birdies and two bogeys were all defending champion Hudson Swafford could manage as he sits tied for 21st on 12 under, along with the highest placed Briton Russell Knox, who had an up and down round of 71.

Second round report

American Andrew Landry is one shot ahead of the pack at the halfway point of the CareerBuilder Challenge in California.

Landry, 30, hopped above first-round leader Jon Rahm with a seven-under round of 65 in the Nicklaus Tournament Course to put him on 16 under for the tournament.

The Texan hit five birdies on the back nine - including one on the par-five 15th where he nailed a mid-range putt.

Rahm followed his opening round of 62 with a 67 on Friday, starting strongly with three birdies on the front nine but wobbling after the turn with bogeys on the par-three 12th and par-four 14th.

Jason Kokrak, joint second after day one, now sits in third on 14-under, while Austin Cook dropped to joint 10th after carding a 70.

Defending champion Hudson Swafford is tied for 19th after carding a four-under round of 68, after a 66 to open the tournament.

Scotland's Russell Knox is the highest placed Briton, rising 54 places up the leaderboard into a tie for 10th with an eight-under round of 64 - five birdies coming on the front nine.

Jon Rahm is all smiles
Jon Rahm: Explosive start with a 62

First round report

Jon Rahm made an explosive start to the CareerBuilder Challenge as he fired a superb 10-under 62 on a low-scoring first day in California.

Rahm made eight birdies and one eagle on the La Quinta course to earn a one-shot lead over the American trio of Austin Cook, Jason Kokrak and Andrew Landry as a remarkable 124 players in the 156-man field finished the day under par.

The Spaniard, who will defend his Farmers Insurance Open title at Torrey Pines next week, got off to the ideal start with birdies at the opening two holes and then rolled in a good putt for eagle at the fifth before picking up further shots at each of the next two holes.

After racing to the turn in 30, Rahm then reeled off three birdies in four holes from the 11th, and he closed with another at the 18th to ensure the outright lead.

"I feel super-rested and really in peace with my game and I think it shows," Rahm said. "Kapalua wasn't the best ball-striking week of my life, but I was able to scramble really well and keep calm and have a good score. Today, it was a complete opposite. I had one of the best ball-striking days of my life and just had it going."

Kokrak and Landry also took advantage of the generous La Quinta layout, with Landry making a spectacular eagle when he holed out from the fairway at the 469-yard 14th, while Cook's 63 was the best effort over the Nicklaus Tournament Course.

In-form left-hander Brian Harman is in contention for the third week running after he returned a confident 65 at La Quinta, while defending champion Hudson Swafford is a stroke further adrift along with Adam Hadwin, who lit up last year's event with a stunning 59.

Phil Mickelson's first outing of the year got off to a flying start as he birdied four of the first six holes, but the five-time major champion stuttered down the stretch and bogeyed 14 and 18 to slip back to two under par.

But American Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed has much ground to make up after managing only one birdie against three bogeys on the Nicklaus layout, leaving him tied for 141st after day one.
