Female marshal suffers broken ankle while searching for a ball

A female marshal suffered a suspected broken ankle while searching for a ball during the first round of the Andalucia Masters.

According to the European Tour, the volunteer slipped while looking for a ball understood to belong to Spain's Pablo Larrazabal on the 11th hole at Valderrama.

Daniel Palma wrote on Twitter that it was his mother who suffered the injury and Larrazabal responded by writing: "I'm sorry ... give your mother a big kiss ... a big hug and quick recovery ..."

Larrazabal carded a quadruple-bogey nine on the hole, his second of the day, and eventually completed a seven-over-par opening round of 78. The start of play had been delayed by two hours due to a thunderstorm.

A statement from the European Tour read: "The marshal slipped when looking for a ball. She was treated by the on-site medics, who suspected a broken ankle. She was taken to hospital for further tests and we're being kept up to date on her progress."
