The Englishman holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th green to move to 21 under and eclipse joint clubhouse leaders Ross Fisher and Kiradech Aphibarnrat and add the title to his Dunhill Links Championship victory last weekend.

Hatton's 65, which matched his third-round effort, included five birdies in the last seven holes as he timed his run to perfection.

However, it was bettered by compatriot Fisher, who shot a 63 to finish joint second on 20 under par along with Thailand's Aphibarnrat.

Fisher birdied three of the first four holes to set up his charge, but finished with four fours.

It proved to be a disappointing day for overnight leader Matt Wallace, who carried a two-shot lead into the final round.

Just two birdies on the outward nine left the Englishman under pressure and a bogey six at the 14th proved costly despite chipping in from behind the green on 17 to keep his hopes alive.

His chance was gone when he found a greenside bunker at the last and emerged with only a par to remain on 19 under and finish in fourth place.

Day three report

England's Matt Wallace will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Italian Open after moving clear of the pack in Monza, and he is now Sky Bet's 11/4 favourite to win the tournament.

Wallace went into the third round tied on 13 under with Marcus Fraser (100/1) at the top of the leaderboard and finished the day four shots better off at 17 under.

The 27-year-old, who won his first European Tour title in Portugal earlier this year, carded five birdies and only one bogey, pulling off an impressive par save at the 18th.

"I'd say we're probably only halfway there because Sunday is a different day," Wallace told europeantour.com.

"I'm going to go out, fight as hard as I can and hopefully be standing here with the trophy tomorrow."

Wallace's closest challengers are defending champion Francesco Molinari (100/30) and last week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship winner Tyrell Hatton (3/1 second favourite) who are both two shots adrift.

Molinari was in fine form in front of his home fans, birdieing the third, sixth and ninth holes and then picking up further shots at the 14th and 17th.

The Italian said: "I'm very pleased. I played very well. Obviously I know it's going to be tough tomorrow but I'm in a good position."

Hatton, celebrating his 26th birthday, fared even better than Molinari on the front nine with six birdies, including four in a row from the fourth.

His back nine was less spectacular but another birdie at the 14th saw him sign for a 65.

Hatton said: "I holed quite a few putts on the front nine and sadly I just couldn't make the most of my opportunities on the back nine. It was a game of two halves on the greens but I'm in a good position going into tomorrow."

South African George Coetzee (14/1) and Kiradech Aphibarnrat (12/1) of Thailand are a shot further back while the round of the day came from Tommy Fleetwood (16/1), whose 63 took him to 13 under.

It was a less successful day for Australian Fraser, who is five shots off the lead in a share of ninth place after a 72.

Day two report

England's Matt Wallace and Australia's Marcus Fraser are joint leaders on 13 under going into the weekend of the Italian Open.

Wallace - Sky Bet's 7/1 joint second favourite - had a six-way share of the lead after the first round and solidified his place at the top with a 65 at Golf Club Milano.

But Fraser (12/1) was the star of the day, shooting a career-best 62 to earn his place at the summit with a blemish-free card of nine under par.

Wales' Jamie Donaldson (16/1) and Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat (8/1) lie two shots off the leading pair after hitting matching 67s, both men capping their card with eagle threes, at the ninth and 14 respectively.

Defending champion and still Sky Bet's 11/2 favourite Francesco Molinari was also circling the business end of the leaderboard, sitting three strokes back on 10 under.

Molinari was among the day one leaders but while he picked up six birdies, his charge was tempered by three bogeys.

Master champion Sergio Garcia (7/1) heads a five-strong group tied for sixth, with Oxford's Eddie Pepperell (25/1) in the same grouping.

Fraser, who put together a streak of five successive birdies between holes eight and 12, told EuropeanTour.com: "I felt like I've putted well and scrambled well this week. Today I took it to a new level with the putter.

"I felt like I putted well yesterday and I probably out-did it today. I'm pretty proud of myself and it's quite reassuring that I still can play golf!"

Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn was among those set to miss the projected cut of two under, a fate shared by the elder Molinari brother, Edoardo, Martin Kaymer, Oliver Fisher, Padraig Harrington and Danny Willett.

Defending champion Francesco Molinari is in a six-way tie for the lead after the first round of the Italian Open and is Sky Bet's 11/2 favourite to retain his title.

The home favourite carded nine birdies and two bogeys in a sparkling 64 to delight the Milan crowd.

Molinari was joined by England's Eddie Pepperell (14/1) and Matt Wallace (33/1), Welshman Jamie Donaldson (33/1), Kiradech Aphibarnrat (14/1) and Alexander Bjork (33/1) on seven under par.

George Coetzee (20/1) and Byeong Hun An (28/1) lie a shot further back, while Masters champion Sergio Garcia (8/1) plus England's Chris Paisley (80/1) and Scot Marc Warren (40/1) are among eight players tied on five under.

Starting at the 10th hole, Molinari registered a hat-trick of birdies from the 14th which he capped by draining a brilliant 20 footer at the 16th.

He finished his front nine in style, chipping in for a birdie at the 18th to get to five under before picking up further shots at the first and second.

Molinari told the European Tour website: "Obviously it was another good day. I started pretty much where I left off last year, so it was great.

"It's great to see the crowds. I think there's a nice buzz around the place and I'm happy and proud to be part of it."

A high-profile three-ball saw the top three in the Race to Dubai, Tommy Fleetwood (100/1), Garcia and Jon Rahm (13/2 second favourite), teeing off together.

England's Fleetwood, currently leading the rankings, hit a level-par 71 while third-placed Rahm came home in 67.
