The Masters: Tommy Fleetwood enjoys round with Tiger Woods

Tommy Fleetwood allowed himself a couple of moments to appreciate playing with Tiger Woods in the Masters, but still outscored the 14-time major winner.

Fleetwood, who missed the cut on his tournament debut last year, carded five birdies and five bogeys in an opening 72, finishing a shot ahead of Woods at Augusta National.

"It was good. It's great to play with him," the European number one said. "Honestly when you're out there, apart from a couple of moments where you might step back and take it in, you're concentrating on your own game.

"He's very, very easy to play with. He does his thing and that's it. He's a really good playing partner. The crowds are good. There was no sort of bad incidents. They were sort of never running away before you putted. It was really good. I enjoyed it, I'd love to do it more.

"It's kind of a different atmosphere, isn't it, around Augusta and around the Masters, and then Tiger on top of this. It's a great experience to have. And when you're playing you feel so fixated on your own thing, so 95 per cent of the time you actually don't take it all in. So when you do it's lovely."

Fleetwood, who was at the course more than two and a half hours before his tee time to watch honorary starters Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus get the 82nd Masters under way, added: "My game is not far off and the swing feels pretty close.

"It's difficult on these greens, because you just can't putt aggressively. You just have to stay patient. I felt like I did really well today and I was really happy with just that side of my game."
