Mickelson wins at Pebble Beach

Phil Mickelson returned to the course on Monday to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am title for a fifth time, securing his first victory on US soil since 2013.

The left-hander had been three shots clear when play was suspended due to darkness on Sunday night, with only Mickelson and 54-hole leader Paul Casey still out on the course.

Casey had been three ahead entering the final round but, at level par with two to play, had surrendered the lead to a charging Mickelson who was six-under through 16 holes having played virtually flawless golf.

That left Casey with a mountain to climb on Monday morning and while firing his tee-shot at the par-three 17th to seven feet, he failed to make the birdie putt and remained three behind the leader, who had missed from slightly further away.

Mickelson was able to birdie the 18th to land the event for a fifth time and spark dreams of a career grand slam, with the US Open - the one major he's yet to win - returning to Pebble Beach in June.

Mickelson, whose victory was also his 44th on the PGA Tour, told reporters: "This is a special place to win at.

"I have so many incredible memories and recollections here over the years and to be able to add to them is something special.

"To play some of my best golf on a Sunday and catch such a good player as Paul Casey means a lot to me."

Casey also birdied the last to take solo second ahead of Scott Stallings, with Jason Day and Si Woo Kim completing the top five.

Day four report

Mickelson, who started the final round at Pebble Beach three shots back, ended with a three-shot lead with two holes left to play.

After a rain-delayed start, Mickelson had produced a blemish-free round and holed six birdies to move to 18 under before play was called off.

Third-round leader Paul Casey, who mixed two bogeys with two birdies, was at 15 under with three holes remaining, tied with Scott Stallings who finished with a 66.

Australian Jason Day and Si Woo Kim, of South Korea, were in the clubhouse on 13 under.

Scot Russell Knox closed at nine under after a fourth-round level-par 72, one shot clear of Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell.

Play will resume at 1600 GMT on Monday.

Third round report

Paul Casey claimed the outright lead going into the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

The Englishman takes a three-shot lead into round four after shooting a five-under 67 on day three on the Spyglass Hill course.

Casey, who won his first PGA Tour title since 2009 at the Valspar Championship in March last year, made gains on the fourth, seventh, ninth, 11th, 14th and 15th and had just one blemish on the sixth.

His closest competitor and four-time winner at this event, Phil Mickelson, moved to 12 under at Pebble Beach after mixing four birdies with four bogeys before taking advantage of the par-five 14th for an eagle to get to two-under for the day.

Americans Scott Piercy, with just one bogey at Spyglass Hill, and Lucas Glover, who recovered from two bogeys on his front nine to rattle off four straight birdies before the turn at Monterey Peninsula, were in the clubhouse on 11 under.

Scot Russell Knox was at nine under, two shots clear of Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell.

The final round will be played at Pebble Beach on Sunday.

Second round report

Paul Casey fired a seven-under par 64 to take a share of the lead before play was suspended on day two of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

Playing on the Monterey Peninsula course, Casey got to 10 under and joined five-time major champion Phil Mickelson, Lucas Glover, and first-round leader Scott Langley at the top of the leaderboard.

The Englishman produced a blemish-free round, picking up five birdies and an eagle on the par-five 16th, after a first-round 69 at Pebble Beach.

Mickelson, starting on the back nine at Spyglass Hill, shot a 68 and closed out with a birdie on the par-four ninth after a run of three bogeys.

Former world number one and three-time major winner Jordan Spieth also sits at 10 under but was forced off the Spyglass Hill course after 16 holes due to rain.

Jason Day and Scott Piercy in sixth and seventh place respectively will also finish their second rounds on Saturday morning, as well as Englishman Tommy Fleetwood.

Brian Gay, who shared the lead with Langley after day one, dropped into a share for eighth after a level-par 72 at Spyglass Hill.

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, playing on Monterey, carded a second-round 70 to move to five under alongside Scotsman Russell Knox.

The tournament is played over three courses - Monterey, Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill - before the final round at Pebble Beach on Sunday.

First round report

Brian Gay produced an impressive birdie run to take a share of the first-round lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California.

The American got to five under at the turn thanks to five straight birdies from the fifth on the Monterey Peninsula course and had just one blemish on the back nine to fire a seven-under par 64.

Countryman Scott Langley, starting on the back nine, birdied half his holes on the same course, including one on the par-three ninth, to join Gay at the top of the leaderboard.

Five-time major champion Phil Mickelson sits one shot off the lead after making five birdies on the back nine for a 65 as he hit every fairway in a PGA Tour round for the first time since 1998.

He was matched by former world number one Jason Day, who had just one bogey on the par-four 15th before recovering with three birdies in a row.

The tournament is played over three courses - Monterey, Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill - before the final round at Pebble Beach on Sunday.

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, playing at Pebble Beach where he won the US Open in 2010, carded a four-under par 68 to sit alongside Scot Martin Laird.

Englishman Tommy Fleetwood finished two over after a triple-bogey on the 13th at Monterey, while Ryder Cup team-mate Paul Casey mixed four birdies and a bogey at Pebble Beach to card a 69.
