Ian Poulter wary of attending the FA Cup final in wake of Monday's terrorist attack in Manchester

Ian Poulter admitted he would be wary of attending the FA Cup final between his beloved Arsenal and Chelsea in the wake of Monday's terrorist attack in Manchester.

Poulter had hoped to be in contention for a first victory since 2012 in the BMW PGA Championship, which would have meant a late tee time and only being able to watch the final on television.

However, after labelling his putting "pathetic" following a second round of 69 which saw him finish eight shots off the halfway lead, the 41-year-old was not certain he would use his early start on Saturday to make a last-minute trip to Wembley.

"I had really good opportunities to birdie all the way back into the clubhouse and I didn't do it," Poulter said after a round containing 16 pars, one birdie and an eagle on the 12th.

"I could have given myself a lie-in (on Saturday). Obviously going to have to get up at five in the morning, but the plus is I'll be able to watch Arsenal beat Chelsea."

Asked if he would be able to get a ticket, Poulter added: "I suppose I could (but) I've got to be honest. I don't know if I want to be going near a stadium right now."

Poulter arrived at Wentworth in confident mood after finishing runner-up in the Players Championship a fortnight ago, his best performance since November 2014 lifting him from 195th in the world rankings to 80th.

That also secured his place in the lucrative FedEx Cup play-offs on the PGA Tour and boosted his chances of qualifying for the US Open at Erin Hills and Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, where he was second to Padraig Harrington in 2008.

But despite improving seven shots on his opening 76, the Ryder Cup star was left fuming with the state of his putting.

"It was absolutely shocking today," said Poulter, who spent two hours rehydrating before he could give a sample for a drugs test after his first round on Thursday evening. "Not good enough. Unacceptable.

"I don't know how many words to describe how poor I thought it was to be honest with you. It was pathetic, it really was.

"My game's in shape. I've hit 17 greens in regulation today on a tricky golf course, so I'm pleased about that. But 34 putts is just simply not good enough. Not from how I've been playing.

"I don't feel comfortable from 15 feet, where in 2010 and 2012 I used to hole them with infinite ease. Something is not right, I'm obviously doing something different.

"An old faithful putter was in the bag to try and rekindle something but I might snap it in half by the time I get back to the clubhouse."
