Huddersfield Town 2-1 Manchester United: Terriers claim famous win

Huddersfield are celebrating one of their best wins in decades after Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre brought Manchester United's unbeaten Premier League start to a shock halt.

David Wagner's promoted side had failed to win any of their previous six top-flight matches and last beat United in March 1952 - just a month after Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne.

United entered the weekend second in the standings but the wheels came off in Yorkshire as Mooy's opener was followed by Depoitre capitalising on Victor Lindelof's error, with Huddersfield holding on for a dream 2-1 win after Marcus Rashford ensured a nervy ending.

Wagner's side were made to sweat but showed no sign of intimidation as they heeded the advice of their raucous fans, whose banner as the teams emerged read "if you have passion and desire you have no limits!"

Sky Bet have pushed United out from 7/2 to 10/1 to win the title after the defeat.

Huddersfield are no longer odds-on for the drop as Sky Bet push the Terriers out to 5/4 to go down.

Story of the odds

  • Huddersfield went odds-on at 8/13 with Sky Bet for the victory as they went 2-0 up, that was cut from 15/2 pre-match with the online bookmaker.
  • There was a 150/1 Premier League RequestABet winner thanks to 3+ corners and 20+ booking points for each team in Huddersfield v Manchester United, Manchester City v Burnley and Newcastle v Crystal Palace.

Post-match reaction

Jose Mourinho accused his Manchester United side of displaying a bad attitude as they succumbed to their first Premier League defeat of the season.

"They beat us on attitude," said the Portuguese.

"When I lose matches I like to lose because the opponent was better than us, had more quality than us. When you lose a football match because of attitude, that is really bad.

"I heard Ander Herrera in the flash interviews saying the attitude and desire was poor....Oh my God. When a player says that, when a player feels that, I think they should all go to the press conference and explain why because I cannot explain that.

"I don't even remember a friendly match where our attitude was so poor.

"I feel really disappointed and if I was a Manchester United supporter, not a manager, I would be really disappointed."

Huddersfield boss David Wagner made no attempt to downplay the magnitude of the day to those who hold the club dear.

"I live in Huddersfield so I know a little bit, maybe not 100%, how huge this result is for this town, for the supporters, for the chairman, for the board, for everyone who supports this football club," said the German.

"I am totally aware that this is a very special moment. A huge result for small Huddersfield Town. I am aware about it and happy about it and proud about it.

"For sure it is one of the top three moments I personally have as a manager of this club. This is a very, very proud moment. We all know how huge this win is for us, that we have beaten Manchester United."
