Newcastle United 1-0 Chelsea: Isaac Hayden heads late winner for injury-plagued at St James' Park

Hayden headed the returning Allan Saint-Maximin's cross past Kepa Arrizabalaga four minutes into stoppage time to send the home fans among a crowd of 52,217 at St James' Park into raptures.

His first goal since February last year clinched a 1-0 win on a day when Joelinton had hit the crossbar with a first-half header, but Martin Dubravka had to make a vital one-on-one save from N'Golo Kante as Chelsea dominated without ever being able to find the killer touch.

• Chelsea have lost five of their last seven trips to St James’ Park in the Premier League (W1 D1).

1926: FT Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea

Steve Bruce's side win their first league game of 2020 and secure an incredible win. St James' Park is bouncing! They have beat Man United and now Chelsea on home turf.

Did they deserve it? Not necessarily. Chelsea had the better chances. But they did not take them, Newcastle did.

1924: GOAL NEWCASTLE!

A LATE WINNER FOR THE HOSTS!

Saint-Maximin crosses the ball in and Hayden is there to head in from close range!

1913: Emerson shoots

Chelsea make a dangerous attack and it looks like they might nick it. Willian's low ball is cleared and it falls on the edge of the box to Emerson, who sends a powerful drive wide of the goal. Unlucky. Emerson then gets booked for diving shortly after. Right decision after falling into Longstaff's hanging leg.

1910: Off the line!

Close call as Azpilicueta heads it on for Abraham in the six-yard box and Dubravka intercepts the ball but nearly punches the ball in the net in the process. That was Abraham's last involvement as Batshuayi comes on in his place.

1900: Changes for both sides

With James struggling with injury, both sides make changes. Barkley is introduced in place of Mount while Krafth makes way for Sean Longstaff. 20 to go. James is going to continue.

This game had a bit of potential and has showed glimpses but it just has not got fully going. It reminds me of Newcastle v Brighton earlier in the season, a goalless draw that nearly wrote me off.

Abraham has a great chance when there's a loose ball in the box, he rounds Dubravka but is off balance and facing away from goal and he hooks an effort wide. And now James needs to go off. Emerson is his replacement.

1849: A rare venture forward from Newcastle...

...in this half. Shelvey shoots from distance (of course), but Kepa holds it well. Chelsea attack at the other end and Abraham cannot get his foot around the ball, volleying high and wide. There must be a change in the offing?!

1844: Wide from Willian

The Brazilian is not happy with himself. Chelsea work it well with a quick break, eventually getting it to Willian on the left of the box, who pulls a low shot across goal and past the post. He scowls to himself. Head up, son. Just one shot on target in this game, that was by Chelsea. N'Golo Kante. But right after typing that, Azpilicueta puts his foot through it (yes, really) from 20 yards and Dubravka saved it fairly comfortably.

1841: Blues to score...eventually?

Chelsea are getting in good areas but not taking shots enough. They are well on top and you feel if they get one, another should soon follow. Like London buses. And that's 15/8 with Sky Bet. The 2+ goals shout, not a London bus.

1821: HT Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea

It's goalless at the break. Joelinton rattling the bar was the best chance but Chelsea, barring a dip at the midpoint, look more likely to score here.

1812: Chelsea free-kick

The visitors have a free-kick in a promising position, right of centre and around 22 yards from goal. A few players look keen and step over it but Mount is the taker, going to whip the ball around the wall and in at the near post but the wall does its job and the ball goes out for a corner, which comes to nothing.

1809: Goalless at the break?

Around five minutes plus stoppage time, which should be a few minutes with injuries to Willems and Hayden. Hudson-Odoi crosses for Mount who heads over from about eight yards, he just could not get over the top of it.

Can either side grab a goal before the break?

1803: Kante shoots

Better from Chelsea as Kante, back in the side today after Barkley's injury, escapes the Newcastle defence with a trademark late, sly run into the box. He shoots from an acute angle and Dubravka saves.

1800: REPLAY - JOELINTON CHANCE

1758: SAINT-MAXIMIN THREAT

The French winger is impressive, coming inside James before looking to put through Almiron, who angled his run well. It takes an unlucky deflection though and Chelsea are off the hook. A shame really, as Almiron has found his shooting boots for United after failing to score for so long.

The Paraguayan now has four in his last seven appearances.

1751: CROSSBAR!

You can see what they are trying here. The hosts get it out wide to Krafth, whose cross sees Joelinton stretching upwards on the edge of the six-yard box. The Brazilian gets a head to it and his goal-bound effort is just out of Kepa's reach, but it crashes the upright and James is closest to the rebound to clear. Great spell for the hosts with Chelsea all of a sudden on the ropes.

1748: Newcastle improvement

Better from Newcastle as the crowd roars them on. They come to life after Kepa flaps at a cross and then Saint-Maximin's effort flashes high and wide.

1747: Mount threatens

Mount latches onto a ball and goes on a mazy run in the box, flashing a cross-cum-shot across goal which is not met. Let off for the hosts. All Chelsea here, no wonder they are 4/11 to score the game's first goal.

Another delay as Hayden now goes down with injury but it looks like he will carry on. Phew!

1740: Stoppage - another injury!

Steve Bruce will not believe his luck. Another Newcastle injury as Willems goes down. It looks like he will be replaced by Ritchie. The full-back looks in discomfort. It looks like an impact injury after tackling Hudson-Odoi. Not good.

1739: Cook to the rescue - ICYMI

Steve Cook's save for Bournemouth in their defeat at Norwich. He is a defender, so in the process he gave away a penalty which Teemu Pukki scored from, as well as getting sent off. Great fingertip save though.

1736: Opening stages

Both sides took a few minutes to find their feet before Chelsea had their first real dangerous attack, earning a corner and Rudiger had a header blocked on the edge of the six-yard box. The visitors looking more lively so far, with far more possession as Newcastle look more happy to sit.

• 1730 GMT kick-off on Sky Sports Premier League

Chelsea will have a bit of up-and-down, the inconsistency of youth, this season but this is a great chance for them to enjoy another good away day as they're a better side away from Stamford Bridge this season.

Most of their slip-ups have come on home soil when failing to break down a stubborn defence, but the one note of caution is that Steve Bruce will probably play on the back foot and look to try and stifle Chelsea's attacking intentions - especially given his injury problems.

At full strength the Magpies could probably give Chelsea a game, and they still might frustrate them at times, but if you throw in Newcastle having to play a midweek FA Cup replay, even an easy victory at home, and Frank Lampard's side hold all the aces.

Prediction: Newcastle 0-2 Chelsea (Sky Bet odds: )

Six changes from Newcastle's FA Cup win over Rochdale on Tuesday. Andy Carroll is not in the squad due to injury - the Magpies are currently missing a number of players - but the big boost is the return of tricky winger Allan Saint-Maximin. Saint-Maximin, Shelvey, Clark, Fernandez, Willems, Dubravka all return.

Chelsea, meanwhile, make just one change. Ross Barkley drops out due to injury and he is replaced by N'Golo Kante.
