England's 1000th international: Assembling a starting XI of players to have only made one cap
England play their 1000th international contest on Thursday when they welcome Montenegro to Wembley in a Euro 2020 qualifier.
A point is enough for the Three Lions to secure their spot at next summer's finals but they'll be expected to wrap up all three on offer to mark the occasion.
Over the years, many have established themselves as legends of the national team. The likes of Bobby Moore, Sir Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks are now household names thanks to the success in 1966.
Since then, England have had ups and downs at both ends of the scale. Italia 90 and Euro 96 are often spoken about, with England nearly going one better under Gareth Southgate in 2018.
There have been a host of players who only got to wear the England jersey on one occasion though. Tom Carnduff assembles the 'best' XI of players who only have the single cap next to their names.
GK: Nick Pope
Pope has established himself as Burnley's number one but is currently the back-up to Jordan Pickford in this England squad.
Tom Heaton's departure to Aston Villa highlighted how Pope was the preferred choice at Turf Moor in the summer. However, he has only managed to feature in one game since his first involvement with the senior national side in March 2018.
His solo cap came in June of that year - coming on as a 65th minute sub in England's 2-0 friendly win over Costa Rica as they prepared for the World Cup in Russia.
RB: Mel Sterland
A right-back by nature but Sterland's ability to get forward and pose a threat in attack saw him become a popular figure at both Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds.
In fact, he managed to net 49 goals during his time with the Owls - averaging one every seven games. Sterland would go on to establish himself as a key player in the Leeds side that won the Division One title under Howard Wilkinson's guidance in 1992.
His one and only England appearance came in a friendly against Saudi Arabia in 1988. Tony Adams' second-half strike resulted in the game finishing as a 1-1 draw.
CB: David Unsworth
A familiar face for many given his recent managerial involvement at Everton, where he was a club legend as a player.
A no-nonsense centre-back, Unsworth made almost 450 appearances during his career, Unsworth's sole England cap came in a 2-1 victory over Japan in a friendly in June 1995.
CB: Lewis Dunk
The current Brighton centre-back has proven himself to be a regular Premier League starter but continues to be overlooked when it comes to England squad selection.
A product of the Brighton youth academy, a brief loan spell at Bristol City is the only time that Dunk has been away from the Seagulls since making his senior debut in 2010.
He made his England debut in the 3-0 win over the United States at Wembley in November 2018, but has had little involvement since.
LB: Martin Kelly
The former Liverpool defender is a feature of the current Crystal Palace defence although is struggling to nail down a regular starting spot.
He is getting more game time in the current campaign after a handful of starts during the 2018/19 season though and will have to swap full-back positions for this team.
Kelly also makes the cut as he has the shortest international career of any senior England player to have featured for the Three Lions. He played for just two minutes and 39 seconds against Norway in May 2012.
LM: Steve Guppy
Steve Guppy burst onto the scene with Wycombe in the late 1980s before being reunited with Martin O'Neill at Leicester in 1997.
The winger would make over 100 appearances for both clubs - going onto play for Celtic, Stoke and DC United among others.
His only England cap came against Belgium, while at Leicester, in 1999. Goals from Alan Shearer and Jamie Redknapp ensured that the Three Lions would win 2-1.
CM: David Dunn
Dunn is someone who is best associated with Blackburn. The midfielder made over 300 appearances for Rovers across two spells - along with time at Birmingham and Oldham.
The attacking midfielder netted 57 goals across a career that spanned 18 years but was only called up to the England senior squad on one occasion.
That came in a 1-1 draw with Portugal in 2002, where Dunn replaced Steven Gerrard at half-time.
CM: Joey Barton
A midfielder who divides opinion but one who has shown that he was a top player at points during his career.
The current Fleetwood manager played in the Premier League for Manchester City, Newcastle, QPR and Burnley and finished just shy of 400 total career appearances.
Barton got his England call-up while at at Manchester City in 2007. He replaced Frank Lampard as a second-half substitute in 1-0 defeat to Spain at Old Trafford.
RM: Lee Bowyer
Bowyer is really starting to make a name for himself in management with success at Charlton, although he was a well-known figure during his playing days.
The midfielder is best associated with Leeds, where he would make over 200 appearances, but also spent time at Newcastle, Birmingham and West Ham.
Bowyer's only England appearance came in the same game as Dunn's - the draw with Portugal - in which he set up the goal for Leeds teammate Alan Smith.
ST: David Nugent
The scorer of an absolute screamer on his one and only cap for England, David Nugent has one of the most recognisable Three Lions goals to his name.
While featuring for Preston in the Championship in 2007, Steve McClaren called Nugent up as cover for the injured Darren Bent.
In the 93rd minute, with Jermain Defoe's shot heading towards goal, Nugent stepped up and blasted the ball into the back of the net as it was on the line, the highlight of an otherwise dull 3-0 win against Andorra.
ST: Francis Jeffers
Another member of the 'One Cap, One Goal' club is Francis Jeffers. He played for 11 different clubs across a career that spanned 16 years.
Jeffers never quite lived up to his potential, particularly after a big-money move to Arsenal, and has since gone into coaching following his departure from Accrington in 2013.
His only game for England came after his move to the Gunners. He netted a consolation goal in a friendly defeat to Australia in February 2003.
