Melbourne Renegades claim first Big Bash League title

Melbourne Renegades claimed their first Big Bash League title after city rivals the Melbourne Stars suffered a disastrous collapse in the final.

Set what looked to be a straightforward target of 146 to win, the Stars were cruising at 93 without loss before losing seven for 19 in just five overs.

Ben Dunk's half-century proved to be in vain with only Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa reaching double figures in an embarrassing collapse that saw the Renegades clinch a stunning win.

Chris Tremain, Cameron Boyce and Dan Christian all took two wickets each while Nottinghamshire's Harry Gurney was economical in picking up one for 20 in his four overs.

Christian had been the saviour with the bat earlier in the day after his side found themselves in trouble at 65 for five just over halfway through the first innings.

Aaron Finch had been run out at the non-striker's end while backing up and Jackson Bird picked up two wickets before Christian and Tom Cooper set about rebuilding the innings.

They did so gradually, before taking 17 off the penultimate over to help catapult them towards a total of 145 for five - with Christian unbeaten on 38 and Cooper making 43 - a total which looked below par on a good wicket.

However despite a fine start, the pressure of the chase proved too much for their city rivals and once the in-form Stoinis was deceived by a Boyce googly, the rest of the batting line-up fell away as they lost their heads to give the Renegades an improbable victory.
