A century by William Porterfield was in vain as Ireland's losing streak against Afghanistan continued after being defeated by 30 runs in the opening one-day international in Greater Noida.
Having suffered a 3-0 whitewash in the Twenty20 series, Ireland looked well set in their pursuit of the hosts' 292 for seven in the opening match of the five-game ODI series.
Porterfield and Peter Stirling (68) put on 157 for the second wicket, but when the former chipped Dawlat Zadran to extra cover for Samiullah Shenwari to take a diving catch low to his left the momentum swung the other way.
Porterfield hit 18 fours in his 119 from 98 balls but, with Jacob Mulder's 15 not out being their third highest score, Ireland finished short of their target on 262 as Zadran and Rashid Khan took four wickets apiece.
In the Afghanistan innings Rahmat Shah top-scored with 78, backed up by Noor Ali Zadran's 51. Kevin O'Brien was the pick of the Ireland bowlers with three for 47.
