Match report

Captain AB de Villiers top-scored with 85 before South Africa's pace bowlers combined to help the tourists romp to a 159-run victory in the third one-day international against New Zealand in Wellington.

Opener Quinton de Kock also chipped in with 68 as the Proteas, having chosen to bat first, posted 271 for eight at Westpac Stadium.

And the Black Caps never got going in response, crumbling to 112 all out in just 32.2 overs. Dwaine Pretorius snared three wickets and Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell and Andile Phehlukwayo two apiece.

The result put South Africa 2-1 up in the five-match series, heading into the fourth match in Hamilton on Wednesday.

Having lost Hashim Amla (seven) early on, the visitors had a minor wobble in the 23rd over with Faf du Plessis (36) and De Kock sent on their way in the space of four balls.

When JP Duminy (16), David Miller (three) and Pretorius (11) came and went it was 180 for six and it seemed all was to play for.

But the hosts could not make significant further inroads, with De Villiers' assured presence key as the runs racked up.

The skipper struck seven fours and a six en route to his 85 from 80 balls - in the process becoming the fastest batsman in ODI history to 9,000 runs.

He departed going for one big hit too many off Trent Boult, with James Neesham taking a fine leaping catch on the boundary.

Parnell also stuck around for a while, adding 35 before being run out, as South Africa registered a target that would prove way beyond their opponents.

Tom Latham set the tone for the home team's reply when he perished in the second over - off the bowling of Parnell - without troubling the scorers, and Dean Brownlie (two) followed his opening partner back to the pavilion in the next over.

Captain Kane Williamson cobbled 23 before being bowled by Phehlukwayo, with Ross Taylor (18), Neesham (13) and Colin de Grandhomme the only other New Zealand players to reach double figures.

Pretorius wrapped things up when he had Boult (four) caught by De Villiers at mid-off, leaving De Grandhomme unbeaten on 34 having smashed two sixes and two fours.
