Sam Curren offers timely reminder of talents with bat and ball ahead of Ashes

Sam Curran served up a timely reminder of his ability with bat and ball ahead of this summer's Ashes as England Lions fought to reel in Australia A.

Curran took five quick wickets on Monday morning to prevent the tourists from setting a mammoth first-innings total at Canterbury, and then contributed with the bat as well as they attempted to get close to 397.

Australia had resumed at 362 for four with another Ashes hopeful Travis Head unbeaten on 130 overnight, but they folded as Curran ripped through the middle order and tail.

The England seamer accounted for Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine, Michael Neser, Chris Tremain and Jackson Bird by the time the score had moved on to 396 to take his tally to six for 95 before Lewis Gregory completed the job with just one more run having been added, leaving Head stranded on 139.

The Lions' reply got off to a shaky start with Zak Crawley, Ben Foakes and Sam Northeast all back in the pavilion by the time the total had reached 51, but opener Dominic Sibley and James Bracey put on 89 for the fourth wicket before the latter fell for 37.

Sibley's departure for 74 after he had been trapped in front by Marsh brought Curran to the wicket, and he was still there at the close on 32 not out with his side having reached 232 for six.
