Match report

Australia began their defence of the Women's World Cup with an eight-wicket thrashing of reigning World T20 Champions West Indies in Taunton.

West Indies, who beat Australia in the World T20 final in India last spring having lost to them in the World Cup final in the same country in 2013, were bowled out for 204 in 47.5 overs with Ellyse Perry taking 3-47.

Australia, chasing a record-extending seventh World Cup title, then knocked off their target in 38.1 overs, Nicole Bolton smashing an unbeaten 107 and sharing an opening stand of 171 with Beth Mooney (70).

West Indies were aided by a missed run-out call after captain Stafanie Taylor elected to bat, with the on-field umpires failing to give Chedean Nation out early in her innings despite the 30-year-old being short of her ground.

Nation went on to hit 39 and put on 52 with top-scorer Hayley Matthews (46) before becoming one of two wickets picked up by leg-spinner Kristen Beams (2-26).

Taylor chipped in with 45 and Deandra Dottin contributed 29 but Jess Jonassen (2-43) also impressed with the ball as West Indies lost their final seven wickets for 47 runs.

Bolton then became the second player to hit a century in this year's tournament, following on from New Zealand's Suzie Bates against Sri Lanka on Saturday, bringing up the milestone off 108 balls.

Mooney was bowled by Taylor, who went on to have Australia skipper Meg Lanning (12) caught in the deep, before Perry (5no) notched the match-winning single.

Taylor's side suffered a moment of real concern when Shakera Selman was struck on the head by the ball following a pull shot from Bolton while fielding at square leg, but the 27-year-old was able to walk off the field.
