Our interview with boxing star Hughie Fury

Hughie Fury tells us that he is relishing the role of underdog as he bids to become a world heavyweight champion next month.

The 22-year-old Mancunian - cousin of former world champion Tyson Fury - is taking on New Zealand champion Joseph Parker for the WBO strap in Auckland on May 6.

Fury (20-0, 10KOs) - the WBO's intercontinental champion - insists the time has come for him to make his mark on the world scene.

"Perhaps my chance could have come earlier than this but I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason," Fury told sportinglife.com.

"The opportunity is here now so it is up to me to take it. Everything is going well and I'm looking forward to it. I will be going to New Zealand in about a weeks' time so we're just working towards that now.

"Maybe when I get there it will sink in more but I'm a very calm person anyway so I'm just looking forward to getting there and getting acclimatised. But it doesn't matter where the fight is, the outcome will be the same.

"I am massively confident that I can go there and cause an upset. I wouldn't be going all that way if I thought I couldn't win and bring the belt back to Manchester.

"It's my first world title fight but my dad [trainer Peter Fury] has been through it all with Tyson so it's great to have him there with me. We are a great team and since he started training me from the age of 15, I have never lost a fight when he has been in my corner.

"I rate Parker - he's one of the best heavyweights out there. He's young, hungry, skilful ... but so am I so it should be a cracking fight."

Fury is hoping British rival Anthony Joshua comes out on top of his clash with Wladimir Klitschko at a sold-out Wembley Stadium on April 29 to set up a potential domestic showdown.

"Hopefully Joshua comes through and I come through and then that would be a great fight for British fans," he said.

"The heavyweight division is buzzing at the moment and it's great to be part of it.

"I have a tough fight coming up against Parker but if I win then I'll be in a great position."
