British boxers set for medals at European Championships

Eight British boxers are guaranteed a medal at the European Championships in Kharkiv to give the team their best ever result at the event.

An outstanding afternoon for the Brits means they will eclipse the team's previous record of six medals taken in the 2015 edition in Bulgaria.

Calum French and twins Pat and Luke McCormack, all from the Birtley club, advanced to the semi-finals along with Galal Yafai, Peter McGrail, Cheavon Clarke, Niall Farrell and Frazer Clarke.

Those eight had already qualified for the World Championships in Hamburg at the end of August by reaching the quarter-finals. In total, there will be 12 Brits heading to Hamburg as Lee McGregor, Tom Whittaker-Hart, Aqeel Ahmed and Sean Lazzerini also reached the last eight before suffering defeat.

Ten of those 12 have been competing in for GB Boxing, while Ahmed and Lazzerini were taking part under the auspices of Boxing Scotland.

The semi-finals in Ukraine will take place on Friday.

GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken said: "This is the first time that most of this team have competed at a major championship, so to come to such a tough tournament, win eight medals and qualify 10 boxers for the World Championships is a superb achievement by the boxers, the coaches and all of the support staff that help to prepare the team.

"This young team are developing well considering the Tokyo Olympics are just over three years away.

"The boxers' have done fantastically well to reach the semi-finals and win at the very least a bronze medal. The challenge for the boxers and the team is to try and turn those medals into a silver or a gold.

"It has been a tremendous showing out here and bodes well for the future."
