World Grand Prix 2017: Barry Hawkins beats Day in final

Barry Hawkins survived a stirring fightback from Ryan Day to win the Ladbrokes World Grand Prix title on Sunday night.

Hawkins, the world number 12, raced into a 9-3 lead at Preston's Guild Hall courtesy of five century breaks - 114, 102, 129, 141 and 128.

But Welshman Day forced his way back into the best-of-19 final by winning four successive frames after runs of 87, 84, 92 and 75.

A relieved Hawkins, however, held his nerve in the 17th frame to pot the black after laying a telling snooker and clinch the title 10-7 to claim the £100,000 top prize.

"I felt so good at the start of the match and played so well. I didn't feel like I could miss when I got in the balls," Hawkins told worldsnooker.com.

"I got ahead of myself thinking I was going to make another century to win. If I had lost that last frame there I don't know what would have happened. I just managed to hold myself together and I got a lucky kiss on the blue after potting the brown.

"You can miss absolutely anything under that kind of pressure. I'm so delighted to win another tournament. I feel like I've been knocking on the door for a little while.

"I've had a few disappointments on the way so I think I deserved that one."

Day had been looking for his first ranking title after 18 years on the professional circuit.

"Every half mistake I had early on, he made a century break. That ramps the pressure up on your next visit, whether it's a chance in the balls or a safety shot. He was relentless.

"If I had won the seventeenth frame, I think it was game on as Barry was starting to feel the pressure. I won four frames relatively quickly.

"I beat Alfie Burden from 9-5 down in World Championship qualifying last year so I was trying to draw on that."
