Won over C&D on debut and then at Kempton on first run of 2016 after a year's absence. Down in grade and off his last winning mark for his first run of 2017. Looks interesting with top rider on board who is 2-4 for the yard. Cheekpieces are tried for the first time.
Sprang a 25/1 surprise at Pontefract in April from 3lb lower. Has failed to show that sparkle in two tougher contests since when the ground has possibly been too quick. Trainer has three other options for him in the next 48 hours in search of the ideal conditions.
Beaten just a head at Yarmouth in August from 3lb higher, before form tailed off. Not much better on her return there earlier in May and with yard going through a quiet spell she may be best watched this time.
Has bumped into a couple of improvers on his last two starts and now finds himself 4lb higher for his latest defeat. Hung under pressure last time and blinkers are fitted. Yard have a lower than expected 6-50 record here and they have been somewhat quieter of late with a 2-21 record in the past two weeks..
Performed better for the application of blinkers and the switch to a mile last week. She remains below her peak form of 2016 and, as she remains above her last winning mark, she has further improvement to find.
Successful for Charlie Appleby at Epsom towards the backend of last season but well beaten on all starts since. Has found little for pressure but an ease in grade may allow him to compete on more equal terms.
Lightly raced son of Cape Cross who made all to score on yielding ground at Ripon. That form amounts to little and his handicap mark looks right. Tried to repeat the same tactics at Haydock and was soon beaten when headed. He will face competition for the lead here and it will be interesting to see if he can handle the situation.
Had plenty of use made of him in a Ripon maiden when taking a backward step from his previous efforts. Tackles quick conditions for the first time which is a plus, but stable form (1-21 in last 28 days) is a concern.
Forecasts
Endless Gold (5/2), Maratha (3/1), Cape Icon (3/1), Anif (7/1), Comedy School (15/2), Maldonado (20/1), Billy Roberts (22/1), Dot Green (50/1)
Endless Gold and Anif look the pick of the younger brigade in this, but neither can be said to well-handicapped. On the other hand CAPE ICON has too much in his favour to ignore. Having won first time out at the start of both his campaigns, today looks the right occasion to catch him in 2017. He takes a marked drop in both the weights and in class. To boost his prospects even more he will have the services of a rider who is in imperious form and who has a 50 percent strike rate for the yard.
