Vazirabad camp consider Goodwood Cup clash with Stradivarius

Alain de Royer-Dupre would relish a rematch between his star stayer Vazirabad and his Gold Cup conqueror Stradivarius in the Qatar Goodwood Cup.

The John Gosden-trained Stradivarius saw off the French challenger by three-quarters of a length at Royal Ascot last Thursday and both horses are among 26 entries for the Goodwood Cup on July 31.

Whether Vazirabad bids to become the first French-trained winner of the Goodwood Cup since the Etienne Pollet-trained Pan in 1951 is dependent upon the weather, according to his Chantilly-based trainer.

Royer-Dupre said: "We are certainly considering the Goodwood Cup for Vazirabad.

"We will keep an eye on the weather as I wouldn't want to travel with him if it is really hot. If it is normal weather and not too hot, we will certainly look at coming over.

"He has come back well from Royal Ascot. He doesn't give the maximum in his races - he is an old man who knows his job and looks after himself!

"Because of the way he races, it has meant he has been able to stay in training for a long time in such good condition.

"It would be nice to take on Stradivarius again."

Stradivarius won last year's Goodwood Cup and is this season chasing the WH Stayers' Million, a bonus of #1million offered by Weatherbys Hamilton which will be awarded to the horse who wins one of four prep races in May followed by the Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and the Lonsdale Cup at York.

Other Goodwood Cup contenders include Jessica Harrington's Torcedor and Aidan O'Brien's Order Of St George, who were third and fourth respectively in the Gold Cup last week.

Twenty fillies and mares have been entered for the Qatar Nassau Stakes, the highlight of day three of Glorious Goodwood on August 2.

Investec Oaks heroine Forever Together is part of an eight-strong O'Brien team.

Gosden's Coronet and Richard Hannon's 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon Brook are also in the mix.
