Mogul won a tough renewal of the Group Three John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes thanks to a late flourish under Ryan Moore on the third day of the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Subjectivist took them along under Joe Fanning and he kicked on early in the straight to get them all racing early.
Deep into the closing stages it looked like Subjectivist might hold on, but the closers eventually got to his quarters and he was flanked late in the day.
It was Aidan O'Brien's Mogul (9-2), the Derby sixth, who got his head in front under a determined drive from Moore, with Highland Chief second at 22-1.
English King, the 5-4 favourite, never looked happy under Frankie Dettori and finished fourth, with Al Aasy disappointing under a penalty in the rear.
It was a step in the right direction for Mogul, the full-brother to Japan, and this could pave the way for another crack at the top-level following his Epsom reverse.
His owners indicated afterwards they could look abroad for him next with a possible Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe tilt in mind.
"I think he's a top quality mile and a half horse for sure," said Paul Smith, son of Derrick Smith of the Coolmore partnership.
"You could be looking at the Grand Prix de Paris, or an Arc trial, he's very versatile. He's a big strong horse, very clear winded, but he has taken time to come to hand.
"Aidan said he was a run short in the Derby and he could come on for this again."
