Chris Day looks ahead to the competitive Saturday card at Haydock and he's got three early bets to consider.
1pt Nymphadora in 1.15 Haydock at 8/1 (Bet 365)
2pts Time Lock in 3.00 Haydock at 7/2 (General)
2pts El Caballo in 3.35 Haydock at 6/1 (William Hill)
With a couple of Group Three races and a Listed contest, Haydock stage a quality card on Saturday, as contenders look to book a late ticket to Royal Ascot in a couple of weeks.
The seven-furlong John Of Gaunt Stakes is always a strong contest and one I particularly like from a betting point of view with the favourite, Aldaary, having shown his best form on ground with plenty of give in it, conditions he’s unlikely to encounter at the weekend.
Angel Bleu bids to follow up a recent course-and-distance victory and has potential for plenty of improvement although I don’t think the form of that race is outstanding in the context of this and his connections did say he really wants a mile to show his best and this course on quick ground could be plenty sharp enough.
I do think Spycatcher, who ran a cracker in the Victoria Cup, could go well but he prefers a bit of give underfoot too and could be taken on for the lead by The Wizard Of Eye, who likes to bowl along, setting it up for a strong finisher.
Whether Boardman is quite this class is in doubt but he’s bred to be good and there’s no question he’s a top class handicapper although he might require a slightly slower surface to win a race of this nature while Jumby will be carrying a penalty for winning at Group Two level in last year’s Hungerford Stakes and was outclassed in the Lockinge. He does come here with his trainer in formidable form though.
A Group Two winner at this track who will not be carrying a penalty is Karl Burke’s four-year-old Havana Gold colt EL CABALLO as that win came last May in the Sandy Lane Stakes, after which he was sent off just 7/2 when disappointing in the Commonwealth Cup.
He returned in the Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster's Lincoln Meeting and I don’t think many horses liked the heavy ground there but he should have no excuses with this seven furlongs on quick ground and he looks pretty good value at 6/1.
Earlier, the mares get their chance in the Lester Piggott Stakes where Mimikyu bids to atone for a narrow defeat by River Of Stars at York recently and this shorter trip promises to be more to her liking so, with the stable flying after a Group One double at Epsom on Friday, she’s definitely the one to beat although her Group Two penalty will be no help as she goes on trial for the Hardwicke Stakes.
This is a pretty deep contest, though, and the victory of Haskoy in last month’s Aston Park Stakes makes TIME LOCK's neck second to her in last year’s Galtres Stakes look very strong and she was conceding 6lb to Mimikyu when beaten just a neck over this trip in a novice here at this meeting last year.
I always like the booking of Ryan Moore for the Charlton stable and, with him looking in a different class at Epsom last weekend, I’m keen to be with the horse at 7/2.
The Listed Achilles Stakes sees a lot of sprinters who’ve been around for a while at this level take each other on again and the draw will surely play a factor but the Andrew Balding's NYMPHADORA, a facile winner in the Chester mud at the May meeting, looks the one to be on. The and quicker ground should be no hindrance on breeding and always highly thought of, she looks ready to start fulfilling her rich potential.
