Fran Berry column ahead of the final day of Royal Ascot 2019

Cleonte can bring Royal Ascot 2019 to a close by winning the Queen Alexandra - get the former top jockey's thoughts on the final day's action.

I like the claims of Pinatubo in the opening race on Saturday – the Chesham Stakes.

He’s two from two and it was only really his class that got him home at Epsom as I don’t think he was suited by the track at all.

He’s out of a daughter of Dalakhani, will relish the move up to seven furlongs and might be a spot of value against Lope Y Fernandez.

His trainer Charlie Appleby will presumably be hoping the rain stays away for Space Blues in the Jersey Stakes. He’s been dead impressive at York and Epsom and physically just looks to be really coming to himself over the past six weeks.

He’s a worthy favourite but Happy Power is dead progressive too and if it’s still a bit tacky over the weekend then he’ll seemingly love the conditions. He’s dropping back from a mile and looks a big danger.

So Perfect looks the O’Brien number one in the Jersey and she’s got tons of speed. She was a close fourth in last year’s Queen Mary so handles the track well and she’s definitely trained on after a good third at Newbury and a win over six furlongs at Naas.

It’s great to see the Investec Derby winner Masar back in the Hardwicke Stakes and it’ll be a fine training performance from Appleby if he wins this.

He doesn’t offer much in the way of value though, with the likes of Sir Michael Stoute’s Mirage Dancer, Coronation Cup winner Defoe and trip-dropper Southern France in there with solid form to their name too.

But I’ll chance Lah Ti Dar who I think would be favourite here had she not gone to Epsom. I’m tempted to ignore that run as it wouldn’t be the ideal track for a filly with one or two physical problems in the past.

The Diamond Jubilee has taken a new complexion with Blue Point lining up. I didn’t see that coming after his King’s Stand win on Tuesday but fair play as it’s a very sporting decision.

His six furlong form isn’t as bad as some people would have you believe as he’s won seven times at the trip. He was also a close third in the Commonwealth Cup here in 2017 when the tactics didn’t really play out for him.

He’s a massive player but I’m sticking with Invincible Army who I’ve had in mind for this for a while. I was at York when he won the Duke of York and was really taken by him physically.

He’s grown an inch this year and while he was a well-held ninth in the Commonwealth Cup last summer, he had won at Ascot at the start of the year.

Hey Jonesy would be my principal choice in the Wokingham Stakes as he was fifth behind Invincible Army at York. He’s not far off pattern class at all and looks just the type that Kevin Ryan will have aimed at this race since the beginning of the season.

The fast-run six furlongs will also suit Cape Byron after he travelled so well in the Victoria Cup, while if I’m allowed a third dart then Gunmetal has done extremely well since moving to David Barron and really caught the eye at the Dante meeting over five furlongs.

The Queen Alexandra is a fantastic way to end the meeting – it’s the sort of race I’d have got a good ride in!

There are some familiar names on show. Max Dynamite has had some time off but I can see him going close for Willie Mullins and Lucky Deal is obviously in good form and open to a bit more improvement as a Mark Johnston-trained stayer.

Cleonte might be the one to side with though for Andrew Balding and Silvestre De Sousa. He didn’t run badly in the Chester Cup and has proven course form having won at the Shergar Cup meeting.
