Report

Martin Dwyer's keep-it-simple approach paid dividends in the Royal Hunt Cup when Zhui Feng gave Amanda Perrett a welcome big-meeting winner in the £175,000 one-mile contest.

It was the trainer's first winner at the fixture for 17 years.

Drawn in stall 26, Dwyer had his mount well positioned towards the stands' rail and made most of the running to defeat Blair House by half a length.

Tashweeq and Ballet Concerto finished third and fourth respectively in a race in which most of the expected main players barely featured.

Perrett's only previous Royal Ascot winner had come in 2000 when Pat Eddery guided Give The Slip to success in the King George V Handicap.

Reaction

Martin Dwyer: "He's a star, this fellow. He ran great here over seven furlongs last time and we knew stepping up to a mile would suit him and he was very tough.

"It's been unusual this year that in all the big one-mile handicaps there's been no front-runners and this lad gallops for fun. When they gave me an uncontested lead I could save him up and then go again.

"I knew I had a real good shot at it as he'd been running well and he loves this firm ground. I knew when I looked around that nothing else was making it and he was enjoying himself. You get to the rail, get in front and just keep pushing - let those behind you find the trouble if there is one.

"It's the hardest meeting in the world to have winners at, but it's a great feeling when you do get one."

Amanda Perrett: "He was very brave from the front. He had a great draw and it was a good front-running ride. There did seem a shortage of front-runners. The ground had come right for him and we'd freshened him up nicely since the Victoria Cup.

"It was the logical place to run and it's worked out really well. He likes Goodwood so he could go there, but we'll enjoy the moment while it lasts. His owner has been patient and he really deserves this."
