Review of the rest of the action from Friday's meeting at Newmarket

A review of the rest of the action from Friday's meeting at Newmarket where King Power Racing and Silvestre de Sousa completed big doubles.

Double delight for Power team

King Power and Silvestre de Sousa completed a big-race, 48.5/1 double at Newmarket courtesy of Happy Power and Winter Power.

The former was a taking winner of the Godolphin Stud & Stable Staff Awards Challenge Stakes, mastering the front-running Pogo approaching the furlong pole in the Group Two contest.

The 7/2 winner was pushed clear by the former champion jockey and the runner-up could never reel him back despite a brave rally.

Glorious Journey (11/2) made late gains into third.

De Sousa said: “I was really disappointed with him at the beginning of the year as I thought I had a really good horse for this year, but he has just taken a long time to get going. He now feels like he is flying and is in top form.

“Andrew’s horses are running well and he is just following the wagon. We’ve always liked him and Andrew had found a couple of easy options for him, but today he has proved he is a nice horse.

“We thought we had him right at the beginning of the year, but he is a horse that has probably taken a long time to get 100 per cent fit. He ran really well first time, then his next couple of runs were disappointing. He wasn’t tailed off, but he wasn’t good enough to win – since Salisbury it looks like he has found his way.

“He likes the ground. It is soft and on the slow side and it maybe just tired the other horses out. That race at Salisbury made you realise there was a little more in the tank than what he had been giving.

“Mentally there is always huge improvement when a horse wins their first race easily. When they come home and enjoy the race, you know there is improvement.

“He is in top form and he probably shouldn’t miss the chance to go there (Champions Sprint at Ascot on October 17).”

Winter Power (10/1) ran her rivals ragged to win the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes for Tim Easterby.

The King Power-owned filly had matters in control from the halfway stage and powered away to win by three lengths from 11/4 favourite Method.

The winning jockey said: “She won quite well at Ayr and has bounced back in great form. She has done really well and won very easily. She just ran in a very competitive race (Flying Childers) at Doncaster where I got beat on her.

“She has shown me plenty of encouragement today to travel very handy and when I asked her the question coming down the dip she handled it well and put the race to bed very nicely.”

Of her prospects next year he added: “This year five is as far as we want to go, but we are nearly at the end of the season and with another couple of months on her back six furlongs will be suitable.

“I think when she fills up over the winter she might just strengthen up. I don’t know how good she will be, but she will always be in the mix in good races.”

Sharp display from Beach

Saffron Beach made it two from two with a ready win in the Godolphin Lifetime Care Oh So Sharp Stakes under Adam Kirby.

Jane Chapple-Hyam's charge had been an impressive winner of a maiden on her debut here two weeks ago and was sent off as the 9/4 favourite as she ventured into Group Three company.

She travelled sweetly in behind the early leader Quiet Assassin until being produced to lead entering the final furlong.

Thank You Next (9/1) and Shine For You (10/1) tried to close her down close home but the daughter of New Bay was always doing enough and won by half-a-length.

Chapple-Hyam said: “That was very good and the staff at home have done a wonderful job. She is a quick learner and I’d love to have a crack at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland, if the owners will allow me.

“We know she is good. I had Annie Skates who was second in the Juvenile Fillies’ race at the Breeders’ Cup and this one is probably a quicker learner than Annie.

“For what she has done at home, we thought this was a suitable step up in grade. She has got a good lead horse in Suzi’s Connoisseur, so thank God for him. The old nine-year-old dog came good!”

Paddy Power and Betfair cut Saffron Beach to 16/1 from 40s for next year's QIPCO 1000 Guineas but Sky Bet offer 33/1.

Their Head of Sports PR Michael Shinners said: "She is clearly an exciting prospect and it's great to see her emerge as a Guineas candidate for her team. It will be interesting to see how she fares if going to America."
