Goodwood best bets

Banker horse racing tips from Sporting Life and Timeform team

The Timeform and Sporting Life racing experts are back with their best bets for Goodwood throughout the week.

THURSDAY

SKYSAIL - 4.45 Goodwood (David Johnson)

A new race for the meeting and the little brother to the Golden Mile in the same way the Britannia is to the Hunt Cup at the Royal meeting. Given how much the draw is usually a factor in Friday’s race, it’s likely to be a similar story here and SKYSAIL has plenty going for him from stall 3. He looked really good when winning over C&D here in May and though not seen to best effect next time, got back on track returned to softer ground at Ascot last time. He’s essentially a speedy type with a good turn of foot, and a return to this track will suit him better than Ascot did. If Dougie Costello can steer him around with an uninterrupted passage, he looks sure to go well.

GET JIGGY WITH IT - 5.20 Goodwood (Matt Brocklebank)

Charlie Hills should know where he stands with the juveniles after Iberian's running-on second in Tuesday's Vintage Stakes and GET JIGGY WITH IT looks to hold excellent claims in Thursday's seven-furlong maiden. She ran a race full of promise when second to the Godolphin filly Race The Wind, who had the ideal spot by the nearside rail at Newmarket's July Course last month, on her first public outing and should have learnt plenty from the introduction. Really soft ground is obviously a bit of a question mark but there was cut underfoot at HQ and it's hoped stall nine may be a positive factor if the jockeys head towards the stands' side in the home straight.

Betfair

DESPERATE HERO – 5.55 Goodwood (David Ord)

He arrives here off the back of a career-best effort at Yarmouth and DESPERATE HERO makes plenty of appeal in the finale. Drawn close to the pace and with proven track form, he also showed he handles cut in the ground when nabbed late by Stone Circle last week. He’s on an unchanged mark (due to go up two pounds) and looks sure to make a bold show under David Probert.

JM JUNGLE – 5.55 Goodwood (Ben Linfoot)

John Quinn has his team in great nick for Goodwood and JM JUNGLE can continue the run with a winning effort in the closing World Pool Handicap on Thursday. The Bungle Inthejungle three-year-old seems to have got quicker for being gelded and his victory over Spirit Of Applause at Haydock last time was a career best. He’s clearly improving, like so many sprinters from this yard, and his third on soft ground at Thirsk earlier in the season is at least some evidence he might handle the ground. He gets a 2lb pull at the weights with the winner Democracy Dilemma here and it could be enough to see the form turned over.
