Open Championship 2017: Record crowds at Royal Birkdale

This week's crowds at Royal Birkdale have set a new record for the Open in England, the R&A has announced.

The aggregate attendance of 235,000 is also the third best for an Open ever, behind only the St Andrews marks of 239,000 and 237,000 from 2000 and 2015 respectively.

The figure has exceeded expectations, with organisers the R&A having expressed hope earlier in the week of attracting crowds of at least 225,000. The previous best for an Open in England was 230,000 at Royal Liverpool in 2006.

R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said: "A record-breaking crowd has enjoyed a week of thrilling golf and we thank every single person who has visited Royal Birkdale over the last eight days for making this a very special Championship."

18 Open Championship stats to mark your card:

1 - Branden Grace now has the number one spot in the list of best major rounds after becoming the first player to card a 62 in one of golf's showpiece events.

2 - Spieth and Andy Sullivan both recorded two eagles during the week - more than any other player.

3 - With aggregate crowds of 235,000, this year's attendance was the third best in Open history. Only St Andrews in 2000 and 2015 beat it.

4 - Rounds in the 60s by winner Spieth (65-65-69-65), the fifth time that feat has been achieved at the Open.

5 - Adam Hadwin, Bill Haas and Stuart Manley tied for the longest bogey streak, all having runs of five bogeys in five holes.

6 - The sixth hole proved the hardest of the week, the 499-yard par four being played in an average of 4.427 strokes. It saw 195 bogeys or worse.

7 - Li Haotong's seven-under-par 63 in the final round saw him shoot up the leaderboard to third place.

8 - Former Open champion Mark O'Meara took eight on the first hole after getting the event under way at 6.35am on Thursday. He went on to shoot an 11-over-par 81.

9 - Number of players under par in the championship when the cut was made after two rounds.

10 - Phil Mickelson and Stewart Cink, both former Open champions, were among a group of eight players to miss the cut on 10 over par.

11 - Defending champion Henrik Stenson finished in a tie for 11th after finishing three under par.

12 - The worst rounds of the week were 12-over-par 82s by Hadwin, of Canada, and Japan's Yusaku Miyazato in round two.

13 - The 13th hole was the scene of remarkable drama on Sunday as Spieth, after a 20-minute delay, found himself playing from the practice grounds.

14 - The 200-yard par-three 14th saw exactly 100 bogeys or worse during the week, 320 pars and only 46 birdies.

15 - The 15th hole proved the easiest of the week, the 542-yard par five being played in an average of 4.657 strokes and witnessing 202 birdies or better.

16 - Eagles recorded at the 17th - more than on any other hole.
