Sky Bet EFL round-up: Missed opportunity for Sunderland in League One, Mansfield's League Two run ends

With the third round of the FA Cup taking place, there was a slightly reduced programme in the Sky Bet EFL...

Sky Bet League One

Charlton Athletic 1-1 Sunderland

Rochdale 0-4 Burton Albion

Scunthorpe United 2-1 Coventry City

Sunderland squandered the chance to move into the automatic promotion places in Sky Bet League One after being held to a 1-1 draw against Charlton.

With the top two of Portsmouth and Luton in FA Cup action, third-placed Sunderland looked set to take advantage when Luke O'Nien volleyed them in front after just two minutes at The Valley.

Lynden Gooch also hit the bar on 37 minutes as the visitors enjoyed the better of the first half, but Charlton improved markedly after the interval and drew level just five minutes into the second period when Reece James diverted Lyle Taylor's cross into his own net.

Burton Albion moved up to ninth in the table as Marcus Myers-Harness scored a hat-trick in a thumping 4-0 victory over Rochdale at Spotland.

Myers-Harness opened the scoring after 19 minutes with a close-range header and doubled his tally on the half-hour mark with a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

Liam Boyce made absolutely certain of the points by making it 3-0 on 78 minutes and Myers-Harness completed his hat-trick four minutes from the end.

Scunthorpe moved out of the relegation zone thanks to a 2-1 home win over Coventry, with James Perch and Levi Sutton scoring the home side's goals.

Perch finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half when his shot appeared to take a deflection on its way in, while Sutton doubled the lead on 74 minutes with a superb finish.

Coventry dragged themselves back into the contest four minutes later through Conor Chaplin's close-range header, but were unable to find an equaliser.

Sky Bet League Two

Cambridge United 2-0 Stevenage

Carlisle United 3-2 Mansfield Town

Colchester United 3-3 Notts County

Crawley Town 1-0 Cheltenham Town

Macclesfield 1-2 Swindon Town

Morecambe 2-2 Crewe Alexandra

Yeovil Town 0-1 Bury

Mansfield's 17-match unbeaten run in Sky Bet League Two came to an end with a 3-2 defeat to managerless Carlisle.

The Stags had midfielder Neal Bishop sent off for a clash in the tunnel during half-time, when they trailed 2-0, but almost fought back to keep their run going.

Carlisle, whose manager John Sheridan resigned on Friday, took the lead through Jack Sowerby after just four minutes and Hallam Hope added a second in the 26th minute.

Bishop's second booking during a half-time confrontation left the visitors with a numerical disadvantage but defender Matt Preston pulled a goal back with 13 minutes left.

Hope restored the hosts' two-goal lead just two minutes later but Mansfield striker Tyler Walker set up a tense finale when he nodded in with four minutes left.

But Mansfield could not avoid a first league defeat since September and slipped out of the automatic promotion places.

Bury replaced Mansfield in third thanks a 1-0 win at struggling Yeovil.

Nicky Maynard scored the only goal after 24 minutes as Ryan Lowe's men moved to within a point of second-placed MK Dons, who were not in action on Saturday and have two games in hand.

Colchester saw their hopes of getting back into the top seven dented after bottom club Notts County battled to a 3-3 draw at the JobServe Community Stadium.

The U's went in front after eight minutes through Sammie Szmodics, but County turned the match around with two goals in three minutes.

Jon Stead headed in from a corner to equalise, before Daniel Jones made it 2-1 to the Magpies after 19 minutes.

Striker Kristian Dennis put the visitors further ahead in the 32nd minute, but Mikael Mandron gave Colchester hope when he scored from close range in first-half stoppage time.

U's defender Luke Prosser saw a goal ruled out for offside, before Harry Pell equalised from the penalty spot after 67 minutes.

Sol Campbell's Macclesfield suffered a 2-1 home defeat as Jak McCourt's stoppage-time winner earned Swindon victory.

Tyrone Marsh volleyed the Silkmen ahead after 14 minutes but Marc Richards headed in from McCourt's delivery to level eight minutes before half-time.

Just when it looked like both teams would be settling for a point, McCourt knocked in a dramatic winner from close range.

Chris Porter scored a stoppage-time penalty to earn Crewe a 2-2 draw at relegation-battlers Morecambe.

Midfielder James Jones put the Railwayman in front after 27 minutes but they trailed heading into added time after Andrew Tutte's 63rd-minute free-kick was followed by Kevin Ellison's fine volley with six minutes left.

But Porter held his nerve deep into stoppage time to convert from the spot and earn his side a point.

Elsewhere, Ollie Palmer's first-half penalty earned Crawley a 1-0 home win against Cheltenham while Cambridge beat Stevenage 2-0 thanks to goals from David Amoo and Jevani Brown.
