Mohamed Salah injury: Liverpool monitoring fitness of Egyptian forward ahead of Manchester United game at Old Trafford

Liverpool will monitor the ankle injury Mohamed Salah sustained against Leicester on Saturday in the hope he can be fit for their first game after the international break at Manchester United.

Salah went down after a challenge from Hamza Choudhury and was later substituted and seen limping out of Anfield after Liverpool's 2-1 win over the Foxes.

Salah will not be involved in any international duty so has two weeks to recover in time for Liverpool's huge showdown with Manchester United at Old Trafford, when they will try to match Manchester City's record of 18 Premier League wins in a row.

It is thought that Salah has merely twisted the ankle and avoided any more serious injuries, but the club will continue to monitor him at Melwood as he receives treatment.

Liverpool insist it is too early to say whether he will be fit for that trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, October 20.

Salah was forced off in added time after being caught on the left ankle by a lunge from Choudhury, which resulted in the Leicester substitute being booked.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp branded the challenge "dangerous as hell" and Salah, who has been rested by Egypt boss Mohamed Barakat with an eye on next month's 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya and Comoros, left Anfield on Saturday limping significantly.

After the match Choudhury was subjected to a torrent of racist abuse on social media, which Leicester subsequently reported to police.

"We are appalled by these comments, which the club has reported to the police and to the social media platform on which they were made," said a Foxes spokesman.

"Discriminatory behaviour has no place in football or in society and we will seek the strongest possible course of action to be taken against those responsible."
