Angel Di Maria ensured Paris St Germain sent out a statement to the rest of Europe with his double in a 3-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid.

The Argentinian haunted his old club, who have won the European Cup 13 times, with a first-half brace in their Group A clash at Parc des Princes.

It increases the pressure on Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and continues his struggles since he returned to the Bernabeu for a second managerial spell in March.

For PSG and Thomas Tuchel, this victory demonstrated they can cope without the key attacking trio of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.

Former Madrid winger Di Maria opened the scoring with 14 on the clock, firing past Thibaut Courtois at his near post from eight yards out after Juan Bernet's cut-back.

Di Maria helped Madrid win La Decima in 2014 and reminded them again of his quality with a wonderful curling strike into the bottom corner, which again left Courtois with no chance.

Neymar and Mbappe were sitting next to each other in the stand and could not contain their delight, but it was almost quickly diminished two minutes later in the 35th minute.

Gareth Bale controlled Presnel Kimpembe's clearance and sumptuously lobbed over Navas from just inside the area on the right-hand side, but VAR ruled he had handled the ball in the build-up and it was disallowed.

Real Madrid did get the ball in the back of the net in the second half too but that was again disallowed before the rout was sealed in stoppage-time.

A swift counter-attack saw Thomas Meunier apply the finish, after another Bernat assist, to wrap up a fine night for Tuchel's team and he will hope this is the start of a successful run in the competition, not another false dawn.

Also in Group A, Club Brugge and Galatasaray played out a goalless draw in the early kick-off at Jan Breydel Stadium.

The result extended the unbeaten run of the Belgium club in the competition, but they were left to rue a hatful of missed chances.

Atletico Madrid substitute Hector Herrera grabbed a late equaliser as his side came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Juventus in Group D at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The midfielder headed in from a corner to earn his side a deserved point against Juventus after Atletico had kept the visitors pinned in their own half for the majority of the first half.

But two minutes after the break Juventus took the lead when Juan Cuadrado fired home and they extended their advantage with 25 minutes to go courtesy of a Blaise Matuidi header.

The Atletico fightback gained momentum five minutes later when Stefan Savic headed home and Herrera's late intervention ensured the points were shared.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was up against Portugal's future star in Joao Felix, tried to hit a late winner but after working an opportunity on the edge of the area he shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Elsewhere in Group D, Lokomotiv Moscow are top after a 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen following first-half goals by Grzegorz Krychowiak and Dimitri Barinov. Benedikt Howedes had put through his own net after 25 minutes.

Tottenham, not for the first time this season, let a two-goal lead slip and had to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw away to Olympiacos in Group B.

Harry Kane fired them ahead from the spot in the 26th minute and Lucas Moura then smashed home from the edge of the area after collecting Ben Davies' square pass.

Daniel Podence pulled one back for Olympiacos on the stroke of half-time after exchanging passes with Mathieu Valbuena and the creator for the first turned goalscorer in the 54th minute - from the penalty spot - to ensure a share of the spoils in Athens.

Bayern Munich top Group B after a 3-0 home win over Red Star Belgrade, but they were made to work hard for it.

The hosts did not open the scoring until the 34th minute when Ivan Perisic got to the byline and found Kingsley Coman, who headed home.

Late goals by Robert Lewandowski - with 80 gone - and Thomas Muller, who became the club's record Champions League appearance maker with his 106th game in the competition, confirmed the points for Bayern.

Manchester City bounced back from Saturday's Premier League defeat at Norwich to win 3-0 away to Shakhtar Donetsk in Group C.

Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan scored in the opening 45 and were involved in each other's goals before Gabriel Jesus secured the victory with a third in the 76th minute in Ukraine.

City are not first in the group, though, thanks to Dinamo Zagreb's 4-0 thrashing of Atalanta following a Mislav Orsic hat-trick.
