Rui Faria: Jose Mourinho's former assistant new favourite for Aston Villa job

Rui Faria could be set to become Aston Villa's new manager with John Terry as his assistant, according to reports.

Faria, Jose Mourinho's long-time assistant, left Manchester United in the summer to pursue a management career of his own and he is now favourite to replace Steve Bruce at Villa Park.

The 43-year-old, who spent 17 years working with Mourinho in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain, is odds on with Sky Bet (4/11) to become the Championship outfit's next permanent boss, with Brentford's Dean Smith 2/1 second favourite.

Belgium assistant Thierry Henry had been the initial front-runner, but the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward is no longer in contention after being sounded out to replace Leonardo Jardim at the helm in Monaco.

Faria could be joined by Terry, who confirmed his retirement at the weekend after leaving Aston Villa in the summer.

The 37-year-old knows Faria well, having worked together during their Stamford Bridge days, and could be part of a new-look management team in the West Midlands.

It has been suggested that Mourinho's rocky start to the season at Man United has been partly down to Faria's absence.

After Faria announced his Old Trafford departure in May, Mourinho said: “Seventeen years…in Leiria, Porto, London, Milan, Madrid, London again and Manchester. Training, playing, travelling, studying, laughing and also a few tears of happiness.

“Seventeen years and the kid is now a man. The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager.

“I will miss my friend and that is the hardest thing for me, but his happiness is more important and, of course, I respect his decision, especially because I know that we will always be together. Be happy, brother!”

Terry is 12/1 to take the main job, with Brendan Rodgers, Marcelo Gallardo and Henry now 25/1.
